I am about to start a new job that will be based in High Wycombe for 3 days of the week. I do not know the area at all and would like some advice on cycling routes for lunchtime rides of up to 1.5 hours.

Would prefer routes that involve some climbs (the more the better).

Lots of climbs in the area. Either south towards Henley or north towards Princes Risborough.

Deends on whether you're in the centre of town or on the outskirts somewhere.

One thing's for sure though, you won't be short of hills. Despite its name, High Wycombe is in the bottom of a valley. You've got two pretty short, sharp climbs giving you about 500ft in about 1/2 a mile straight off.

If you're in the centre, then you can head up Marlow hill and go to Stokenchurch via Lane End. Then drop down and come back to town via West Wycombe.

Or reverse the route. When I take my daughter to Ballet in Lane End, I sometimes do a loop of about 15 miles, via Lane End and into Stokenchurch and back in about an hour. But from the centre of Wycombe, I'd need to add another 3/4 hour on to get to Lane End.

But then I'm slow and fat.

Head towards Aston Rowant, Chinnor or Princes Risborough and there are plenty of climbs to keep you busy within a sensible radius of work.

I'm not really local but I sometimes go play in the Chilterns.

Example routes:

Just get an OS map and go on the backroads where the contours are closest together!

We got lost around Princes Risborough on our return riding the Ridgeway double last weekend. I can confirm there are lots of lovely road climbs about. Probably rode most of them, don't ask me where though as the gps had died, it was pitch dark and I was having a slight sense of humour failure after 20+hours riding.

It's time for OS-map whilst on the bog reading smile

Used to pass through there, as met a mate from London and we'd go up through the Chilterns

Loads of hills!!! Some really long ones as well. Nice scenery, sorry I can't be more specific!

Theres also a dual carriageway in the town centre that was quite brutally steep with a cycle lane along side it, it was like riding up a set of stairs!! I thought it would be great interval training if I lived local, , shame I hit it 70 miles in a 150 mile ride!

That's part of my commute. Do it on my Brompton...

4 mph going up and 44 mph coming down.

what part of Wycombe??
plenty of little circuits you can ride in 60 to 90 mins with hills or perhaps without if you roll out to Princes Risborough then onto the Aylesbury Vale (depending on where you are hills may be unavoidable). PM if you like

44mph on a Brompton! eek

That's a scary hill, not only the gradient, but the traffic.

I thought that originally, but it's not too bad as there's only one road that joins it.

As it's two lanes, you can move into the right hand lane so any cars coming out don't suddenly pull out in front of you.

Much better to go down quickly than Desborough Avenue as you have cars reversing out of their drives, and several junctions.

It's just the speed wobbles I had to watch out for...

Ugh. Desborough Avenue. High Wycombe really is an utter toilet of a place, I don't blame you for wanting to leave at lunchtime!
