Cycling to your car in London?

Random question but I'm sure one that people have done on this forum before. I'm about to move to London and will have a company van that will be used every day. As most London properties within the city centre don't often come with parking or cost an arm and a leg for a permit I was planning on parking a few miles out and cycling home.

Does anyone have any experience of this? how far out of the centre do you think you'd have to park? Were living near the centre for my finances job and I'm curious as to how hard it is to cycle in central London. Any advice?

Cycling in London is fine. My commute takes me 9.5 miles every day from north west London through the west end and out into the city.

However you may have to go a long way out to find free parking. I'm in Zone 2 which used to be considered a long way out but which is now plastered with Controlled Parking Zones (CPZ's) and has been since the late 90's

I'm in zone 3 and every year there's more and more cpz's coming in.

A while ago I parked about a quarter of a mile away from my place whilst I was sorting out my parking permit and it was a bit of a pain..

Where are you actually going to be living, should be a permit based street parking nearby surely?

Have you thought of selling the car?

Walking, cycling and the tube are all you need to get around town. Then hire or use a car share scheme when you want to go further afield.

Not a very PH suggestion though, I grant you...

I doubt if his company would be too pleased if he sold their van!

My bad, I misunderstood. I thought he had a company van to use during the day so wouldn't need his car, hence parking the car out in the suburbs. Re-reading I get it now.
