I fractured my 5th metatarsal last Thursday.

Ive been on crutches for a week, and now am weight bearing in a airboot.

It doesn't hurt to walk in the boot, but the foot is still bruised.

How long till I can properly ride my bike? I rode it round the carpark yesterday, but this enforced rest is killing me.

Have you weighed the airboot yet to work out how much you must spend on shiny new bits of ally and CF to mitigate the extra mass?

Would be cheaper to lose the belly

Wouldn't that be up to you, how fast you heal, your pain threshold and all that good stuff?

I personally would seek some professional advice on something like this rather than some randoms on a bike/car forum on the internet. Maybe book an appointment privately with someone who specialises in sports injury and are aware of various loads likely to be encountered.

I snapped my Achilles tendon last year, about a 4 month repair till I could walk without the boot.

I was warned my several doctors, its not when you can ride again, its when the repair is strong enough to ride again, and not 're-break' should you take an unexpected 'off'!

I started with rides along old rail paths, i.e. flat, no cars, reasonably safe, before returning to the bike parks

Good luck with your recovery!

I fractured my tib/fib in September while riding to work on the roadie, currently at three months off the bike.

When I first did it the general consensus between bikers who'd done it before, doctors and the physiotherapy folks was hovering around the 5 month estimation and at the moment I have no reason to disagree.

At three months there was finally enough strength and healing occurred to stand and hobble without a boot cast. I expect to be driving in another month so 5 off really sounds accurate in my case.

For you, who knows.

I've taken my time to upgrade my MTB frame (new Kona Process frame swap) and consign my road bike to ideas that were good in theory (for the moment).

What's the rush?

It's been a bad year for accidents in my club, kicked off by me back in January (broken femur), one guy came off and fractured his scapula, another a few ribs and then my FIL got knocked off and broke his collar bone in November.

For some reason, the last 3 have all rushed to get back on the bike and then moan about the pain they are in!

My FIL is a nightmare, he just can't sit still, he's been building furniture, tiling and riding, he's 66, has rheumatoid arthritis and has a broken collar bone. Doctors recommended he took 6-8 weeks off due to his medication surpressing his immune system and likely increasing the recovery time from the break, but no, he was out at 4 weeks, trying to point a prove I guess.

Me, I came off in mid January, was non weight bearing for 6 weeks, then weight bearing, then having to learn to walk again from around 12 weeks. Around mid May I started on a spin bike and took my first ride out on the road early June.

I'd see a sports physio. They'll give you a range of exercises to do. You'll then be able to compare one foot strength to the other to measure your progress. 1 legged squats and a balance board would be my non-expert recommendation.
