Unable to grease my Speedplay pedals fully

I gone through the YouTube vids and found them straightforward to follow. It looks pretty simple TBH. Rather than spend £40 + £12 for the Speedplay gun and grease respectively, I found a thread somewhere where marine white grease and a small-nozzle generic grease gun is fine and meet the Speedplay specs.

The grease is not going in far enough to push the old grease out to the spindle side. In fact I am going red in the face in effort and not making any progress. So I am probably doing something wrong but I don't know what. I have removed the screw and small cap before putting the gun nozzle to the pedal. Grease is coming out of the nozzle.

Has anyone else had this problem or can anyone point out my failings? Much obliged.

You're not alone, I've had the same lack of success copying those vids.

I use a very basic cheap small 50p syringe with normal bike grease, unscrew the endcap, force the plunger down, old grease splurges out of the spindle, keep going until new greases splurges.

Does take a fair bit of force, but it's only a cheap small syringe so can't put that much pressure on it.

The gun your using is much more hi tech, does it have a big opening? The syringe I use mates up quite nicely with the end cap so you can push quite a bit in.

It's a small nozzle, I'd say 1 mm at a guess. I'll see if I can source a larger one. Bloody annoying

Chap at work turns out to have the Speedplay gun which he's happy to lend to me. I will soon find out where the issue lies, hopefully.

Lucky you! I bought one of those and couldn't get it to work at all. Worst bike tool I ever bought, I ended up applying the grease (admittedly to open bearing cups) by squeezing it straight from the tube and smearing it with my finger. Previously I'd used a disposable syringe without a needle, which worked better, but eventually the grease buggers up the seal in the syringe.

Exactly the same outcome with the Speedplay gun

The nozzle is fractionally larger but really not much in it. I certainly don't think it's the reason why I can't put enough grease in or why it doesn't come out the designed end. The Speedplay gun is easier to use and lets you exert more pressure with the longer lever. I'll call the bloke who sold me the pedals (The Bike Whisperer) and see what he thinks.

Thanks for the update. I half suspected there was something wrong with my method rather than my choice of gun, and that confirms that there might be. I'll standby for further news...

I did mine for the first time last night, very easy with a 5ml Syringe (£1 for 10) and didn't require much force at all.

I've have no problem using one of those.

OP, Do you speedplays also have a plastic cap/grommit as well as the screw for the port? In the past I have carefully prised the plastic cap/grommit out to enable me to force more grease in.

Yes, tiny screw undone and then I remove the back bezel that the screw sits in the middle of. Then grease nozzle on to the visible bit showing.

All that happens is the grease comes back towards the gun and overflows.

There could be your problem. you should just remove screw and insert the grease gun into that hole. Don't remove anything else.

RGambo is quite correct and I was doing it incorrectly

I now have fully greased Speedplays using my Beta gun and white marine grease
