Trust bottom bracket / frame after this?

I have a trek madone and after about 2 years of riding, I was on a ride and the bottom bracket started squeaking - after a couple of miles the pedals / crank were wobbling around and then bracket wad just to unstable - you could tilt the crank in and out massively.

I took to the LBS and they fitted a new bottom bracket. The did say there was still some movement in it however - I think this from the frame where the bb fits being partly worn or distorted maybe? You can tilt the cranks in and out a couple of millimetres.

Is this going to be ok or will it fail dramatically again? I'm planning a long 1000 tour at the start of summer and it's bugging me!

Blimey. Whether it's something wrong with the frame, or something wrong with how the LBS have fitted the new BB, I certainly wouldn't be riding a bike with a couple of mm of wobble on a brand new BB.

My experience is that any kind of play AT ALL in the cranks rapidly leads to serious permanent breakage.
I suspect that may have been what happened if you continued to ride it once the play was evident in the first instance.
The problem is the number of repetitions and force applied - it's a lot.
With a zero play situation - no problem because that force is being 100% applied to the right bits.
But with any play, something other than simple spherical bearings is taking a beating.

Worth trying again or a different LBS?

A Madone with a pressfit bottom braket? If there is that much play then something has gone badly wrong. Could try contacting Trek for a warranty claim maybe?

Not sure on exact type of bb but I believe it's a bb90?

Yes I was thinking of contacting trek but it's a 2012 model so maybe they won't be interested? I think I can remember them saying lifetime warranty on the frame though?!? Worth a try.

LBS sounds clueless - they should have advised you on fitting the new BB that damage has occurred and any measures that could be taken to rectify such as warranted claim not shoved it back together still knackered, presumable billed you and sent you out of the door.

Yep, I think Trek even did a slightly oversized bearing kit (a bit of foil stuck around the outside).

Trek do have a life time warranty on the frame if owned from new. If something has failed or worn excessively then i'd be on it.
