Winding Up Our Mate
Discussion
As i mentioned on here, last year I did my first Sportive, the Touro The Borders in Peebles.
I also did the PoppyScotland ride in September.
This year I plan to do those 2 as well as Etape Loch Ness in 4 weeks or so.
There were 4 of us who did Touro last year, one of my mates is the brother of one of the guys who did it. He came along to the finish and got really inspired by the atmosphere on the day, etc.
He vowed he would take part this year.
We have now recruited another 3 so there will be 8 of us doing it.
Anyway, I digress...
My mate, Stevie, is one of the biggest wind up merchants going.
He has never owned a bike, so has been asking loads of questions on our WhatsApp group we set up for the cycling stuff.
He was i a local bike shop the other day, looking for shoes and must have posted 30 questions, and phoned me 3 times.
Now, as well as offering helpful advice, I thought I would take the opportunity to wind him up a little, so I told him the following:
Socks - get some "Pro-Sock" carbon fibre ones as they reduce the rotational mass when pedalling and your knees will thank you.
Lights - get UK-specific ones with the different beam pattern otherwise you will blind drivers coming towards you. Look for UK at the end of the model numbers.
Chamois cream - I use Udderly Smooth just now, but I would recommend that new stuff, made by a Scottish company, called "Baws Slime" as it is getting great feedback.
My other mate then joined in, and told him to buy bottle cages made of Carbonium as it's even lighter than carbon fibre and saves a load of weight.
Get those little tablets to make up sports drinks, they are called "Turbo Tabs", the boy on the till will know what you are on about.
So, I wish we could be a fly on the wall when he goes into the Edinburgh Bike Coop and asks for some carbon fibre socks, a packet of Turbo Tabs and a tube of Baws Slime

These opportunities don't present themselves too often so you have to make the most of it!
