Easy software for gpx / route editing?

I have a bunch of GPX files from other MTB'ers.
In the past I added these to runkeeper, edited, and sync'd to my phone to follow on the trail.
I now have a Garmin Edge 1000.
Basecamp sucks.
What software can take a GPX file and EASILY split it, edit it, etc.
All I want to do is add extra bits to existing routes to make them a bit longer - or join a couple of loops together.
Shouldnt be this hard!!!!!!!!!
