Hello,

Family and I are heading out to Aberhafesp near Newtown in Wales this Summer and I'll have a day or two to do some cycling.

I prefer off road biking (Single track) to road cycling.

I'm being rubbish at finding nearby trail centres or bike parks or whatever we call them these days. It's like my Google powers have deserted me.

Does anyone know of any places to ride vaguely near this town (30 minute drive) ideally with Bike hire so I don't have to drag mine with me.

Thanks, Andrew.

http://www.mbwales.com/

Coed y Brenin or Nant yr Arian are a little further than 30 mins but not by much. Antur Stiniog only a little further than that.

This all looks to be nearby too- http://www.llanidloes.com/cycle_llanidloes/index.h...

I stayed by Newtown during the Easter holidays. I suspect there are plenty of excellent trails in the close vicinity, but as I had the kids with me, and didn't fancy the potential randomness of point and squirt with an OS map, we just went over to Coed y Brenin. It's a lovely drive through lovely countryside, so although it took around 45 minutes to get there, nobody actually cared! smile

The other benefit, if relevant to you, was that my wife doesn't ride, but was delighted with the signposted running trails of multiple lengths there, plus there's a nice café for everyone to meet up in.

I live in Newtown.
If you definitely want to ride MTB as opposed to road, the best thing is for you to travel.

There are downhill tracks in Caersws with uplifts (approx 3 miles from Aberhafesp), I believe they held a round of the U.K. Championships there a few years ago.

Go up to Nant yr Arian (towards Aberystwyth) approx 35 miles away. This is a trail centre with 3 routes, from 11km up to 35km, red and black runs. Have a cafe and bike wash but not sure about bike hire. It's also a red kite feeding centre, hundreds of red kites arrive in the afternoon for feeding, the family could have a mooch about while you go off cycling for a bit.

Llandegla is approx 1 hour away, that's a good centre with blue, red and (and black?) runs.
Coed y Brenin is about an hour away as mentioned above.

Hopton woods is about 45 mins away, has downhill and trails.

You can ask cycle the trails on 'long mynd' or 'Shropshire hills' search online for these. Not a cycling centre as such, but miles of tracks over the countryside.

Another one I can think of is in Machynlleth. Go to the cycle shop there ( actually not sure if it's still open!) or the tourist information. There are some awesome trails cross country and a big descent through forestry called 'machX' and 'climach'. Check it out in YouTube.

Also some tracks across the Elan Valley (near Rhayader) around the reservoirs and cross country if you want.

Coed y Brenin is great fun with plenty of trail choice. I read a lot about the area before visiting in 2014 and 15 and lots of talk regarding the Mach Loop's, rode medium length one and was disappointed. Seemed to spend most of the time getting on and off to open and close gates. I would just go on Bing maps, select OS overlay and then pick some good Forrest trails, some nice sections just outside Land-of-Toes (Llandiloes) and Elan Valley.
