So, last Thursday I completed my longest ride to date, 75 miles in 4hr50, have been training well over the last few months.

On the last ride, I fuelled correctly but probably screwed up my hydration as only had 1500ml of fluid, with me and couldn't find a shop to stop and buy some more water a, I did get a can of coke down me 30mins before the end of the ride though.

Came home, had a protein drink and had dinner a few hours later. About 8.30 started getting a pain in my side, thinking it was delayed muscle soreness, took a nurofen, 30 mins later getting driven to a&e with the most pain I have ever been in !

So after spending 7 days in hospital on iv antibiotics, I've been diagnosed with acute cholecystitis, infected gall bladder, I have to wait sixish weeks before they whip my gall bladder out due to how bad my gall bladder was. This might coincide with ride London so that will make my decision for me.

But if the op is after ride London, will I be able to recover back to my old fitness in time ? I feel like crap at the moment and the thought of getting back on the bike is not appealing unfortunately.

I have no idea what your condition is, but I would think you mad to try. Contact the organisers of RideLondon, explain your current situation and ask if you can defer to last year.

It is a brilliant event, but the thought of trying to ride and worrying about that condition flaring up again would really put me off. I don't think you'll get much fitness back before the event either, so you're asking a lot of your body. Wait until you're better.

Cheers, Dave

I'm on a charity place so here's what happens if you get injured on a charity place... You lose everything you have raised on the virgin giving page, you don't get a defferred entry for next year either.

Interestingly, the consultant (who is riding the marmotte this year) reckons I would be ok, once my body has recovered from the antibiotic etc.

Skip it. Go to the website. Fill in the cancel form. They will send you a form later in the year to explain your deference.

I did it last week. It hurt more than my heart attack to do it. But, don't ride ill. You are a risk to yourself and others and waiting for an ambulance in agony on a ride will stay with you a long time.

Give it a miss.

Edit. Just read about the charity bit... health of self before health of others. It's got to be that way.

So, if I understand correctly, you have an infected gall bladder, which they're gonna clear up with antibiotics. At some later date, they're gonna whip the gall bladder out as a precautionary measure because it's a bit secondhand? The consultant basically said it's OK medically?

If that's an accurate summary, and you want to do it, just get on with it. Fitness is going to make a difference to how fast you go, otherwise it's just a long day of sitting down, completing shouldn't require any special fitness.

If it was a slipped disc, or something similar that might be worsened by exercise, I'd say otherwise.

There is still a risk of another gallstone attack which is disabling to say the least !

You said infected not gallstones (calcification)? Is there any reason why exercise would bring it on? From my limited understanding, I see none (that opinion being worth the paper it is *not* written on). The consultant said you could - which should be worth somewhat more.

If you don't feel inclined, there's plenty of opinion above to support that smile You asked about fitness - I'm mostly going on the consultant's opinion, and the fitness argument (i.e. it doesn't need to be an especially taxing ride). You might even get better/faster medical assistance if you keel over mid-way than at home (I'm kidding).. got to be up to you.

Infected gallbladder goes hand in hand with gallstones unfortunately, seeing another consultant this week, so should get more info, you would not want an attack whilst doing the ride London I can assure you of that !
