Time to upgrade my Edge 510 and would like mapping for when I'm away ... anyone got their hands on one yet? Looks like the ideal unit for me ... 1000 is just too large and the 520 is like the 510 ... lacking in mapping and a touch screen but just in a better package.

Yes... Had mine for 2 weeks now . Ive used a Garmin for years and years , 520 & 810 .... I love it . Maps are excellent compared to previous editions . The wife likes the thought of accident notification . I emailed CR a couple of weeks ago to find out when they was going to stock them and they said Tomorrow , 11th Aug. I was impatient and paid full wack from SigmaSport.

Reassuring to hear that you've had the 510 and 810 and like the 520. I've given up using the breadcrumb trail mapping of the 510 ... worse than using your 'nose'!Great stuff, thanks for the heads up ... will be on there to order tomorrow.
820 base maps are much better ... With my previous maps ive always used the usual Drainmaker instructions to download the better maps which i still found a pain to do. I used the map for the first time properly on Friday to route me down some lanes where a car accident had closed the roads in a area i dont know that well. After that im not even considering changing any base maps , detail was excellent compared to previous .
I'm liking the 820 so far having had it for a couple of weeks now. I have or have used pretty much all of the Edge range and my initial +ves for the 820 are:
- Size is the same as the 520 so smaller than the old 800, 810 series.
- The touch sensitive screen is better than the 800/810 being more like a mobile phone as with the 1000
- Its a buttons and touch screen combo - i was not a fan of the scroll buttons on the 520 - I find it easier to swipe between data and map screens than scroll with buttons
- Incident detection seems like a nice idea - I really like live track so the family can keep tabs and someone knows if I'm in a country lane ditch.
- Navigation seems to work well straight out of the box just like the 1000. The 520s ability to upload and navigate small areas of open street maps in my experience wasn't great as it occasionally missed turn alerts (although i concede it was a vast improvement on breadcrumb trails).

I'm not sure group track offers much for me. Probably more of interest for serious riders who might train or compete in groups. If i'm out on a ride with others then they are within shouting distance.

How are people finding the 820? I got one last week and it seems to have a few issues:
1) The elevation is wrong. It seems to think Bournemouth is 50m below sea level and I cannot find a way of correcting it. I have tried manually setting the elevation, at home and at work but it forgets the settings and reverts to showing -50m.
2) It seems to loose sensors or completely fail to notice them until the end of the ride. On my commute yesterday it showed my heart rate for the first 300m then it lost the sensor until I got home.
3) It has locked up a couple of times and I have had to hold the power button down for a while in order to switch it off.
I have read that there are issues with using it in the rain, with raindrops activating the touch screen.
I have also read that the screen is poorly calibrated resulting in people deleting rides by accident.
I am considering sending it back and reverting to my Edge500.

I've had some issues with the touch screen but a hard reset usually sort this. I can believe the issue with rain as I had a similar problem with beads of sweat dropping onto the screen. It wouldn't be a new Garmin if it didn't have a load of bugs and issues for the first twelve months.1) The elevation is wrong. I had an issue with the screen in the rain .... the unit kept scrolling through the pages and managed to self-navigate to the page which deleted the route I was on! Pretty frustrating to be honest .... but you can use the screen lock function which should negate this. I literally got the unit the day before I experienced this so probably my fault.1) The elevation is wrong. There is a bit of odd calibration on the screen ... I seem to remember the 510 allowed you to calibrate during initial set up.
Battery life is pretty awful IF you have HR + PM + Navigation running. Seems to barely last a 4 / 5 hour ride. Although, the battery save mode is very good ... I started out with 24% when in Mallorca last week, disconnected HR & PM's and turned off wifi and BT. I was out from 10:30am till 6:30pm and managed to get back ok with data in tact. I did break the ride down into two parts though ... saving the first 60 or so miles and then saving the rest at the end. The screen goes totally blank during this mode so you need to allow navigation or other alerts in the settings so you can actually get some info.
Not 100% convinced but it hasn't turned itself off mid-ride like the 510 did on the odd occasion .... but it has corrupted 1 ride already

Sounds like my Garmin Vivosmart HR. The shower used to set it off. Gave the missus the fright of her life when my phone started playing music on the bedside table! Ended up having to disable that screen as it took Garmin over 6 months to add a screen lock.Garmins frustrate me. My 510 has been immaculate but my wife's 810 has been nothing but trouble. I hope the Wahoo products take off and Garmin get some competition at last. I've never known a company offer so much promise and then ruin it with the software, each update breaking something that was fine before.
