Carmarthen to Cornwall in a day - doable?

I feel a bit foolish asking this, but an old colleague has just posted on FB that he's cycled from Carmarthen to Newquay in a single day.
I was in the Army with him, and he was and still is supremely fit, but this just seems unbelievable - according to google maps it's 255 miles on motorways, so add a few good miles on for A and B roads.
I hate to even ask this, but is this doable? I can't even imagine being able to keep up a 30mph average for 8 to 9hrs.

250 miles and sub 10k ft of climbing?
The Audax crowd would find that quite doable. That's not hilly for a roadie. You're looking to have a moving average of 13mph over 19 hours, which is slow for roadie with decent break times.
Could I do it? By miles no way at all. However, a clubmate did LEL in under 4 days (that's 800 miles in 4 days total), and that included sleeping. If someone that fit got up and just set to, 250 miles in 24h is quite plauible, I guess. My PB is 150 miles / 7500ft climb in 13h moving / 16h total, and that was including stopping for over 1.5hrs waiting / watching the Tour of Britain go past. I'm utterly rubbish by PH PP forum standards..

In my defence, I hadn't actually read the chaps FB profile, another mate said to me "Have you heard what Pete's just done, cycled to Newquay, Cornwall in one day!", and I foolishly took it at face value.

There used to be regular steamers between South Wales and the West Country coast in the summer. Something to do with exemptions to Sunday drinking laws I think. My grandad used to tell us all about it, going to Swansea (Blackpill) on the train from Gorseinon, up to the pier on the Mumbles railway, and off on the boat for a half-day out and about in Ilfracombe, getting 'well oiled' on the way there and back. None of those things exist anymore. Not the railway to Blackpill (now a cycle path over most of it's length), not the Mumbles railway (half a tram in the museum, and the old station in the car park at Oystermouth, and it's route is now a traffic free cycling route from Swansea to Mumbles). The boats no longer run, unless Waverley, or the other one what's name I can't remember, are running day sailings or charters on their summer tours round the coast. And Sunday drinking laws have been consigned to history too.
I've given serious consideration to riding 'home' to Gorseinon from Farnborough, Hampshire. It's between 200 and 220 miles dependant upon route taken, and estimates on route planning websites vary between 18 and 19 hours to cover the distance at 11/12mph average. I'm under no illusion that I'll be that quick over such a distance, but I reckon it's doable in one hit, possibly under 24 hours even. Sadly I don't think I'll ever do it because my wife worries enough when I head off somewhere like Goodwood and back in a day. She'd be a gibbering wreck if I set out on such a silly quest!
