Not really impressed with the trp spyres on my defy disc
So looking at the trp hd-ry cable operated hydro calliper.
Looks good
But then my research showed up the Acor Hydraulic/Juin Tech R1

Disadvantages vs the trp, closed system so not self adjusting, but much better pad securing vs the rattly trp
Oh, and the price, £93 a full set

A mate also hates the Spyres on his Giant.
I swapped the front Promax Render R out on my Whyte for a HyRd and it’s been great. Seems to work better on semi metallic pads rather than sintered.
The sintered pads squealed horribly and also rubbed badly when worn down. Not sure why. Even wear rate is brilliant as is the fact that it takes no time at all to replace the pads and reset the pistons. Both the Promax and apparently the Spyres have issues with getting the pads stuck in.
The only downside is having two different sets of pads on the bike. They bite very near the end of the lever travel which can be dialled out but every bit mechanical information online says don’t do it. You get used to it but at the very end of the pads life it can be a touch disconcerting.
Would be interested to see how someone gets on with the Juins. Seem like a good price and it would be good to have a matching set of brakes on the bike.

"I'll add a note of caution, not directly related to the brakes but rather to anyone looking to replace TRP Spyre brakes with a cable-hydraulic setup and who uses a Giant Defy Advanced (and I guess the aluminium or Advanced Pro) frame. You may have an issue fitting them if using 160mm rotors. This is down to a combination of factors; the location of the brake mounts (the angle of the rear stays on the one hand) and the design of the brakes you'll be looking at (either the TRP HY/RD of the Juin Tech). Both of those brakes have adjustment screws (Juin Tech) or cable lever arms (TRP) which when you try mount them on that frame, will interfere with the seat stay - you can't mount them as is. The TRP Spyre brakes fit fine because their design requires a little less space (length wise).
The Juin Tech distributor in the UK was very helpful - the solution suggested by the Taiwanese Juin Tech office (complete with photos) was to use an adapter on the mount (like you'd need to use for 160mm rotors in any case) which shifted the mounting location of the brakes. In addition it required using 180mm rotors. It doesn't look as quite as sleek as 160 or 140mm rotors I guess, but the end result is brakes which fit and work well. There is also a school of thought that larger not smaller rotors are a good idea, especially for road bikes where heat build up (if you were doing alpine descents) would be better handled by larger rotors. And of course, larger rotors equal better stopping power in any case. They certainly don't look too bad on my bike - I'm glad I went down that road. NOTE: this comment may affect other bikes' designs but it's quite possible that it's only Giant's frame design that is affected."

Larger rotors don't equal better stopping power, in most cases contact patch is the determining factor unless you're stopping a particularly heavy load. I cant say anything on the Spyres but I had BB5 mech calipers and they are really annoying, they require adjusting every 30 miles. anyway i swapped them for the TRP Hyds and they are great. Weekend just gone I was in the Purbecks and they coped really well. Ive had them on about 2 years now and am really happy with them!
