Ive had 2 pairs of sealskins socks and 2 pairs of gloves. I don't think there much kop to be honest.
Plus water running down your legs still gets in the socks when its raining heavy.
This, but it pools in the bottom of the sock rather than running out. I've two pairs, not worn them for quite a few years.Plus water running down your legs still gets in the socks when its raining heavy.

It just becomes horrible when you get off and start squelching around.
I've got a few pairs of those sealskinz. They are good if you wear waterproof trousers, but as above, with shorts they are next to useless. They do sortof have the wetsuit effect but after 30 mins or so in heavy rain, they fill enough that the water gets cold, so you need to stop and take them off and empty them out. We were stopping at about every other marker on the Penmachno loop to do that.
Bit of a pain taking shoes off etc.

After 10 or 11 years of suffering through winter with summer kit I've decided to up my game this year, I've got a decent jacket from Royal, some water proof shorts from Tenn on their way and was going to top it off with some Sealskin socks and gloves.
I've read they're pretty good up to the point the elastic starts to wear and they let water in the top? Is that not really the case?

The elastic really does die quite quickly in my experience. Perhaps washing on a cool cycle...?
The insides go all crinkly too, so not massively comfortable - and as has been said, water runs down your legs and in.
For commuting I've considered the neoprene overshoe things. You look like a bit of a clown, but if they work and keep me warm I couldn't give two hoots what I look like on the bike. It's the cold that gets me more often than the wet, and I figure neoprene will keep the windchill out better?

'Spose it depends how chunky your legs are, my svelte pins weren't fat enough for the seal to be tight. I was thinking of putting elastic bands round them to try and get a better seal. After 10 or 11 years of suffering through winter with summer kit I've decided to up my game this year, I've got a decent jacket from Royal, some water proof shorts from Tenn on their way and was going to top it off with some Sealskin socks and gloves.

I used Sealskinz then upgraded to a pair of NW Celsius boots, night and day in terms of warmth and dryness.
Obviously the boots are x times more expensive, but a worthwhile investment
Ditto. Had mine about 7 years now I think.Obviously the boots are x times more expensive, but a worthwhile investment
I have noticed, though when using them on my road bike that the outsides of my feet start to hurt after 20 miles.
Swapping cleat positions improved this for a while, but I've now bought some Body Geometry shoe wedges to see if this resolves the issue.
My basic Shimano shoes I have no issue with, nor any recent issues with knees or hips hurting....

I love my sealskinz even with shorts (I almost exclusively ride in shorts)
They keep your feet dry if its a damp day (or if you're going through the odd water splash) but if it rains they do fill up but the water gets nice and warm and it's a bit like having a warm foot bath - I think the Merino wool is doing it's job here.
Would recommend.
Obviously as per previous poster don't tumble dry!

I've got some think Neoprene ones which are great when it's either bitingly cold or really really wet. A bugger to get on and off though. The insides go all crinkly too, so not massively comfortable - and as has been said, water runs down your legs and in.

Then I've got some lighter weight stretchy ones. Good for showers, light to carry. easy to get on and off.
Tried some Salomon shoes but they were rubbish so have gone back to Tresspass DLX's which are far better in terms of being warm and water resistant/proof.
My Sealskins have gone baggy and I might not replace them as (a) I always wear shorts to water will always get in the top anyway and (b) it's sometimes better to just bring a spare pair of lighter dry socks for the rid home anyway.
