Turbo Trainer Suggestions

Now the darker nights are upon us, I'm struggling to get out more than once a week.

I'm thinking a turbo might be a complementary addition to have as a back up.

I'm looking for some suggestions as to what to buy.....it would be used in my conservatory, so whilst something quiet would be good, it's not imperative.....

Budget around £150 as I will need to buy a new rear wheel/tyre etc (I already have a cassette).

That's pretty much the setup I run.

I bought the Elite Chrono Mag TT first, then the front wheel stand (after I realised I could use one after my first session) then the sweat guard (after I realised I needed one after my second session ).

Last year I used it with TrainerRoad, this year I am giving Zwift a whirl but will probably go back to Trainerroad again.

If you want to use a 'dumb' trainer with software like TrainerRoad or Zwift (which to be honest is a must to get a meaningful workout and stay interested) you would ideally need a power meter that can connect to your computer. Or use virtual power with a cadence/speed sensor like the bluetooth Wahoo Blue SC or Garmin with an ANT+ USB dongle.

If at all possible consider investing in a smart trainer like a Tacx Vortex as then Zwift is really interesting, and Traineroad becomes less tiresome trying to hold a particular powerlevel (it does that for you instead).

That said I did 18 months with an Elite Qubo Fluid and it was perfectly fine.

As a mainly recreational rider, I'm trying to give my legs a work out on the occasions the weather prevents me from getting out on the road.

I'm also looking at heading out in the dark, on the nights I'm able to when it's not raining. (My lights are permanently charged so I can go at a drop, bearing in mind work and family duties (read that as taxi driver!)).

Appreciate the comments regarding power meters etc, but my main road bike only stood me £700 so this isn't a route I would want to persue, just looking for a basic-ish turbo which is decent quality and preferably quiet! :-)

You can save money by buying a used rear wheel. The only thing that needs to 'match' is the cassette, chain & gears.

Yes, budget for wheel assembly is "separate" to the trainer.

I already have a new cassette, so just wheel / trainer tyre & tube are required.....

Whereabouts are you located? I have a pretty much unused Tacx Flow that is surplus to requirements - quite happy to let it go FOC to a good home, including a Tacx Turbo trainer Tyre. I'm on S.E. London / Kent / Surrey border in the vicinity of J5 on the M25

Both myself and my OH have the cheap bikehut one from halfords.

It's actually pretty good if you are happy to change resistance manually and only have 5 levels.

it's not too noisy, it's really sturdy and cheap
