mtb for sportives?

coming from a road background, I'm looking for a hard tail mtb bike to do a few sportives on next year for around £600ish

any recommendations from the likes of Pauls Cycles etc?

Ah gotcha. Never heard of an off-road sportive - I thought that term was used exclusively for road events.

Sorry can't offer any advise - I've been away from the MTB scene for a few years having switched to the road. Apparently 26" wheels are dead and everyone bangs on about bigger wheels "rolling better" or something...

I have a barely used, still as new, Giant XTC1 29" hardtail, size large, that's surplus to requirements, for not much money.

Thanks for the offer, i'm 6'1, so may be too small for me, from the one 29er I've looked at (Voodoo Bizango), I'm around 20" or L frame

Not a sportive, just an organised ride for lots of riders on local trails that you have to pay for the privilege?Dont see the point?
Either do a race or get out and ride the local trails with your mates?

Is this a question or a suggestion? They may not be to your liking but they're clearly popular with many people.

I've not entered a mtb sportive before but was out riding with my mates and passed a few bikes with numbers on and then noticed we'd joined a signposted route Evans organised sportive. So on getting home had a look on strava Flybe's and found someone who had recorded the route, down loaded it and another day went and rode it. I have to say it was a good route took me down a few tracks I'd not been down before. I'd say if fit enough to to manage one (that one was 60km almost all off road and some nasty climbs totalling about 1200m) and relatively new to mtb it'd be a good rally good way to explore an area, the organisers obviously plan the route to take in good riding, it's sign posted, food stops and others to talk to, even better if you are new to an area or don't have riding buddies - not everyone does.

Regards bikes something like this would be my choice for a road rider dabbling in XC and not wanting to spend much, I'd ditch the front shifter and go single Narrow wide ring up front and sorted.

Those Cannondale Flash Alloy 29er lefties that Pauls Cycles have for about a grand are fabulous value for money. A little over budget, but ride great and are nice and light, 10.6kg ready to go. Quick too with the 29er wheels.

Michael - I made a mistake with the description; it's a large frame, not medium.
