Hi,

I'm after advice on kids bikes for upcoming birthdays for my two youn 'uns.

I had in my mind that I was going to get them a couple of frog bikes. Frog 55 for boy and a frog 69/73 for my girl. Her inside leg at the mo is about 71cm and her birthday is the end of next month so she may well be just about on a 73 by then.

Anyway, we tried the frog bikes and all was good but the bike shop recommended one of these for here as an alternative to the frog, http://www.trekbikes.com/gb/en_GB/c/kids-neko/p/15... it seems really nice but heavier than the frog and 25% budget creep too,

As I was almost set on frogs for both of them, I'd not really considered anything else. Is there anything else I should consider? Not bothered about suspension and all that kind of stuff. Just a good, no frills bike.

I could go second hand but they've never had a brand new bike before.

Islabikes are highly regarded and quite rightly too, but they are a little too expensive for us I think.

Ah one more thing, the frog bikes come with a second set of tyres and mudguards too. Lovely little bikes.

Thanks in advance.

Ah yes, boy will be 6 and is perhaps average size for his age. Daughter will be 10 but is tall for her age and is prob same height as an 11 or 12 yr old.

Well we went from a 24 inch MTB to a 27.5 for my daughter who was just gone 9 at the time. She's been on it 3 months and does very well on it, no issues. It is a 12.5 inch xs womesns Line Series Cube, and going to that size wheel increases your options.

Having said all that, in the 26 inch size, look at Dawes Academy bikes. Very light and well respected, go to a kids XC race and you see how popular they are. Well worth a look and the rigid ones affordable.

If your 6 year old is quite tall, go for a 24 inch, but reckon on him being outgrown it by 8 or 9.
For a cool boys 24 inch, see if you can find a discounted Cannondale Street 24. Super cool in black with lefty rigid front.

My daughter is 5.

Up until Xmas 2016 she was riding a Frog 48 and loving it. The bike had a couple of issues over the two years that she had it, which Frog dealt with to our satisfaction.

Santa brought her a Frog 55, as she had outgrown the 48 and really needed gears. We had no hesitation in buying another Frog bike. She cycles a fair distance on the bike and loves it. We had the 'knobbly' tyres fitted over the slicks as we cycle more off road, but its good that Frog supply both. With the Frog 48 we had to buy a set of knobbly tyres.

When we sold the Frog 48 privately, we hardly lost anything on it. We had a number of people experessing interest in the bike, so the stories about resale (for us) were true.

She did spot a Specialised Riprock which we couldn't get her off in the shop, but the suspension is no use to her and disk brakes were a bit of a gimic too. It comes with 2.8 inch tyres and i wondered how much of a drag these would be on a long ride. Maybe this will be her next bike in a couple of years!

There's a spotty Frog 52 here for my 6 year old daughter, can't fault them.

My lazy 3 year old boy is about to get an Early Rider, the Frogs are a little slanted towards girls imo and I wanted him to have something a little more chunky.

My lads Frog 52 has put up with plenty over the couple of years he's had it. Ridden loads - he actually wore a chain out.

Fitted some RST Capa Forks and 2.1" tyres to make it more Mountain bike a while back.

Number 2 daughter has a Frog 73 and it's transformed her interest in riding, 2nd in a Southern XC MTB race the day after she got it biggrin That Trek looks nice but that's quite a budget creep!
