Want to get back into the MTB and am looking for a hardtail for the locals trails/woods. Don't want carbon or full-sus.

This bike is top of my price range but still looks good value, I would be more comfortable spending around £1500 to be honest but budget creep etc. My road bike is a Canyon which has been faultless - when it turned up! This model looks to be in stock also which is a bonus.

That's a great spec. Fox 34's and Eagle drivetrain for that money is a steal.

Have a dig around the main site, there's lots of different options if you want to trim or extend your budget, and all of the builds have some degree of freedom to chop and change elements of the spec. I very nearly bought a Zero before I got a Giant Anthem (full sus) at a massive reduction, making it an absolute bargain. I'm currently without a hard tail, but Bird would be my first port of call if I had the cash to buy one...

Considering the shock and the groupset would cost you £1300 alone the canyon is a good deal.
If you believe in getting the best bike you can with the best value for money then the Canyon is it.

I have got a Grand Canyon SLX 9.9 but the 2016 version. It is equipped with XT & has the fancy Terralogic Fox forks (these are mega). The frames are identical. Overall it's a rapid XC bike, it's not shy of getting stuck into the rougher terrain. According to Strava I'm quicker on the GC than my other hard tail although the Canyon is a kilo & a bit heavier. The canyon was my 1st 29er & I like it a lot. Definitely not the slow steering barge they can sometimes be labelled, I find it very nimble & precise. It's quite low at the front (moreso than my Mrs Scott Scale) & feels longer, I like this, feels purposeful & quite "racey". Great bikes although Canyon after sales can (or at least used to) be quite wanting.

XC trails on my doorstep in Gloucestershire. Some singletrack in my local woods and as a bike to ride alongside my son on the common.

Can you give examples of better bikes? Don't want to buy used.

Eagle groupset alone is £1000, £450ish for the fork, makes the Canyon look like a bargain if you want a top spec hardtail.

Rose Count Solo. Rose is Canyon's main competition here in Germany. You can spec the Rose how you want, and the frame is excellent.

You also never have to interact with Canyon's abysmal customer service.

Obviously "almost new second hand" is almost always a better deal. See also cars, motorbikes, etc. But some people don't want SH, and buying a new item has its advantages if you don't know your way around what's available.

Another vote for Rose here , mines beautiful.

Rose's Customer service is unbelievably good.Nothing is too much trouble.

I bought my CX bike second hand from eBay. It's been an amazing bike with 000's kms clocked up but just want to buy new this time.

The Canyon is great value but I do see your point in that it's great kit built around an average frame.

I still have a Trek hardtail which is perfectly servicable but I'm keen to see and experience the new tech.

Carbon is out as I may want to attach our Hamax child carrier on occasion and also a trailer for holidays.

I've got a Rose and a Canyon. My experience of customer service with both has been very positive. No complaints at all.

Bike arrived today 3 days ahead of the estimated despatch date. Hopefully take it out tonight. One question - the forks are Fox Float34 - are the supposed to lock out 100%? when dialled to firm there is still some slight flex
