New forks or new bike?
Discussion
My wife's started using her mountain bike a little more often ut last time we went out as a family, she was complaining that she didn't have suspension forks.
i thought I might be able to pick up a relatively cheap pair of forks and simply fit them. I wouldn't be too worried about ruining the geometry as it's never been used in anger and a higher front end probably wouldn't be a bad thing.
It's a GT something or other - don't remember off-hand - so wouldn't be worth much or keeping 'original' so I'm not too worried about that.
But when I started investigating prices of forks:
a) I was shocked at how much a 'decent' pair of forks costs, and
b) realised that for not much more, we could get her a new bike with suspension, correct geometry and discs.
Given that she's had this bike over 10 years and used it about five or six times, i'm loathe to spend more than necessary, but also don't want to balls up an otherwise sound bike by fitting something completely wrong.
If you were in my position would you go new forks or new bike.
OR...
Option 3: I buy new decent forks for my bike (1999 Orange P7) and put my forks on hers.
