Looking at these

Toughroad is very much in the Marin Muirwoods rigid 29er mold road biased MTB riding position and can do gravel as well.

Specialized Sirrus is a true roads only Hybrid.

Commute is only 4 miles

The Specialized will be the faster bike but I think the ToughRoad will be the more comfy fun bike.

will be doing 4 mile bimble to work not pushing it.

Home time is when I'll be getting on it taking longer and longer routes home on Manchesters crappy roads

A colleague at work has an old Sirrus and I'm currently eyeing up a new one myself. They look very reasonably priced, capable and comfortable.
I should imagine with the correct tyres it will be capable of your commute - unless you plan to take it properly off-road.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the Sirrus and also the Marin Fairfax SC4 (A very very similar bike)

Specialized Sirrus Sport 2017 Hybrid bought, should have it Thursday, Leisure Lakes matched hargroves cycles -20% price and paid £540

rode a lower spec in the right size in shop, bob on, non of the weird funky feeling the Boardman gave
