Clicking gears

My gears no longer change smoothly and there is a audible click on every revolution.

Not being particularly mechanically minded I am unsure where to look - I have tried cleaning the chain and applied lubrication but this has not worked at all.

I changed my chain lube a few weeks ago to Muc-off Dry lube is this what is causing the problem? I did my sons bike 2 weeks ago and he is now complaining of a clicking as well.

Did you remove the chains when re-lubing? If so, it’s possibly a stiff link where you re-joined the chain together.

if it a constant clicking - then I would reckon , it just needs fine tuning via the barrel adjuster

No, I did not take the chain off just put some chain cleaner on it, scrubbed it a bit and then washed it all off.

Then applied the chain lube. I am getting a bit fed up with it to be honest it's turned the bike into a right nail - changing gear means it takes a few seconds to sort itself out.

I have tried twisting the barrel adjuster each way and that makes no difference - I will try and look to see of there is a stiff link.

Why not take it into the shop for a service. Last time mine wasn’t changing perfectly it too him 2 minutes and cost nothing.

I imagine a service would be quite expensive?

It is only a 400 pound bike and it is also 4 years old so not worth throwing 50 quid at.

As above it might just need a fine tune like mine did a twist here a twist there and job done if you know what your doing.

rotate the crank backwards slowly. When it clicks you will see the chain ride up on the cog. This is where the link is stiff. Wiggle each one to free it and give it a clean and lube.

Otherwise look on the Parktool website for the article on adjusting rear derailleur. Twiddling the barrel adjuster without understanding what it does will likely make things worse.

Why not just buy a new chain, aint that expensive.

Try some of the lube you used prior to the dry stuff you are using now

If the derailleur hasn't been knocked so is no longer aligned then after 4 years your cables have probably stretched so indexing of your gears needs doing.

Indexing is quite simple to DIY, watch some YouTube videos and get an idea of how the process works, you can't make it any worse. (hopefully)
