I have a used sram front mech from 2011 which pre-dates the chain spotter and thought it would be nice to install one.
So I bought a chain spotter from planetx for £5

The planetx offering is advertised as a 'replacement' chain spotter so it comes with the bolt to mount it, but not the special bolt with a threaded socket in the head that it mounts to, highlighted in yellow.

Here's what you get from px for your £5

It looks like if you buy it as a chain spotter kit, rather than as a replacement, you get the other bolts too, but these are more like £20.

Are bolts with a threaded socket in the head generally available? I haven't been able to find one, but I don't know if they have a special name?

Any other ideas on how to mount this chain catcher?

Not a standard item by any means. You also need the black cap, as this provides stability for the chain catcher.

The black cap doesn't seem quite so vital.I have a force22 mech that came with a chain spotter on my other bike which has a shimano band on adaptor so that black cap wouldn't fit, I get the point that the cap would help and might change the adaptor at some point with one of these https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FSBABOC/battaglin-fr...

With a little more thought, I have a plan.

I have a deda dog fang style chain catcher that I'll use on the bike with the spotter incompatible band on adaptor and force 22 mech. This will liberate the chain spotter, special bolt and black washer that came with the force mech. I'll return the planetx additional chain spotter and claim my £5.

Then I'll use the force mech's spotter and mounting hardware with the older 2011 style mech so everything should be good and outlay minimised.

I'll have to swap the mech mounting bolts over unfortunately which means re-indexing both derailleurs. Nevermind!
