I want a trail helmet but quite frankly the choice is overwelming.Very few shops carry stock so the internet is the better option,I will order a few and keep the best fitting one.
How did you choose your helmet, cost, looks, protection or fit.

I have a Troy Lee Designs A1, bought based on reviews, cost and choice of designs.

Cant fault it, fits well with good adjustability, very comfortable, good ventilation and good protection.

Helmets are a bit of personal preference bit like saddles. I personally base my decision on reviews, cost and if I like the design.

I travelled to a shop that had loads in stock and tried them all on, deciding on the one that fitted the best. In my case it was a Giro Montaro.

^If you can, do this.

Heads are funny things; you would not think it possible there were so many variations in shapes and sizes. I learned this buying crash helmets for motorsport. Different brands suit different swedes.

Recently bought a 7idp M4 helmet, £25 some places online and looks ok, fitting system is good and low price means it's not too bad if you crash and need to replace it.

I'd second this. I have one and no only is it comfy, well ventilated and good looking it's the nicest made/finished helmets I've had.

I really like my Endura SingleTrack, comfy, light and good coverage. It’s also well ventilated which is important for me as I’m a sweaty bugger, the TLD would have been unsuitable for me for that reason.

Thanks for the input. A good point about cost and replacement,it's one I hadn't really thought of.

I've a TLD A1, incredibly comfortable but I do get hot in it, I'm fat and unfit though. Only real issue is with the quality of the padding inside, after a year the cover of the padding has come off in certain parts and a couple of the Velcro fixings on the helmet have come off, still a year on from there hasn't deteriorated further. Will probably replace with the MIPS version some point this year.

Another with an TLD A1 here, bought in the sale, £40 I think. I don't find it too hot but I've not ridden it in the summer yet.

This is honestly the only place I've ever seen an A1 described as 'well ventilated'.
Comfiest lid I've ever tried, but proper toasty.

To be fair my old helmet had even less vents so anything is well ventilated compared to that.

A lot of brands do reduced price crash replacements. Seriously - buy on what fits your head!
