I just received an email from Canyon telling me not to ride my belt-drive Commuter frown

It seems there have been a few instances of the Continental belts snapping rather suddenly and causing serious injury in the ensuing crash. I assume the (more common) Gates systems are unaffected but maybe some of you might want to check what belt drive is on the bike......

I've ridden the bike almost daily for 2 years and the belt looked perfect when I checked it over a week or two ago but who knows, especially as I often have my son on the back. Shame as I love the bike......

I'll hear more next week about the proposed remedy. I'm guessing it'll most likely be a replacement, improved, belt but maybe they will want to change to a Gates system as I notice that almost all the current range is now Gates rather than Continental.

Interesting.....I bought a Continental belt to replace my Wahoo Kickr belt around 8 months ago....the original belt was 2 years old and I thought it prudent to change out of precaution. 8 months later the continental belt snaps.... scratchchin

So Canyon got back to me yesterday and they are essentially recalling all their Urban/Commuter bikes which were fitted with the Continental system and will be changing it to the (IMHO superior) Gates system instead. It seems that Continental have no replacement for the 8mm belt system and all the belts are bad as the email included a warning not to buy and fit a new belt as it would be just as risky. I am guessing I'll be asked to post or take the bike to the local NL service centre but I'd prefer they just sent me the parts.

I'm to await further communicaton on the 24th..........

In the meantime, they have apparently stopped production of all their current Urban/Commuter models with belt drive to free up parts for the recall.

Meanwhile, I'm commuting on my 3-speed, 21Kg Dutch lump.
