Another what Mountain Bike £1500

Good Morning,

I've never purchased a reasonable mountain bike, my last one was a £300 Trek about 15yrs ago.

I'm looking for something for the locals trails, forests, nothing too serious, it's more for fitness over the winter.

My budget is around £1500, what's recommended?

I personally prefer something a little slacker but for basic trail riding these would be fine

the other option would be to go for a hard tail, something like an Orange Crush, Nukeproof Scout, Trek Roscoe or Whyte 90X

Whyte make good bikes, I rode a 901 for a while - a brilliant bike, it’s a hard tail but I’d have a look if I were you.

Go and try as many as you can as I found different makes offer different sizes and some where comfy some where not.

I learnt the hard way buying the bike I wanted and thought it was the right size. £1500 later and a few rides I don't use it as find it un comfy to ride.

Have a look at Calibre available at Go Outdoors.

You can get a full suspension Bossnut for under £1k. Great reviews and great bikes.

For that use and budget, I'd be looking for a really nice hard tail... No point lugging around unnecessary weight and complication.

Have a squint at the Cube offerings; they make a decent frame and are always well specced in terms of cycle parts.

Timing helps too; there will be loads of end of season offers.

I got a 2020 Trek Roscoe 7 from a Trek store for £850.

Yep the calibre bikes are great vfm. Stuff being rattled around on a hardtail when you can get a decent full suspension bike for that sort of money.
Of course it very much depends on your riding.

If you're looking at a Bossnut but have £1,500 to spend you could upgrade to the Triple B, has a good spec including a dropper and NX drivetrain

I’d be looking at a hard tail at that budget. You’ll get better forks etc.

I think I’m going to buy a Vitus from CRC once they are in stock in the next few weeks. Not a brand I’d normally consider but the spec against the Orange I was also looking at is too good to ignore.

Im looking at a Vitus to.

Applogies for this thread hijack, but Im in a similar situation. Decided I want to get back in to MTB after a long time away. But dont want to spend to much initally incase it becomes a flash in the pan.



Weighing up the following:

Specialized pitch expert 2019 (can be found on sale for £449 & possibly also purchase Rockshox Recon RL Solo Air Fork on sale for £144)

Vitus Nucleus 27 VR Bike (Altus 2x9 - 2020) £549 (already has air fork?)

Good budget 27.5 options?

Looked at 2nd hand bikes but if you use cycle to work or other tax breaks then new makes sense.

Yes it’s a spectacular saving but still £1000 over the OP budget.

I bought a Whyte 905 earlier this year for just about the same reasons as the OP. It’s a great bike at doing mountain bike stuff but it’s a right slog when you just want to go out on the compacted trails/paths and get a few miles in. I wish I’d just bought a gravel bike in the first place, I think I’d have had much more use out of one by now.

Good that you recognise your error (the 905 is a proper trail bike.) and are advising the OP accordingly.

For you, having bought the bike, the answer is to now go and hit the bikeparks
