Are mountain bikes the new GT3?

Looking for new bike. Seems that the 2021 stock of some high end brands (Yeti, Santa Cruz)is already sold. I managed to order the bike I wanted but one of (if not) the last Stif had in stock. Such a backlog for building I'll be picking mine up end of next month.

I managed to get a carbon Santa Cruz frame from Stiff last October. I was after an Chameleon alloy version but took the carbon. I built it up from scratch with new parts.
A fully built version would have taken 3 months to arrive.

Even mid-tier in short supply. I ordered a Specialized in colour of my choice in November. Delivery is May/June.

Only problem is that biking will be more expensive - Looking at the latest version of the bike I ride, it looks like it has gone up in price 15% every year since I bought mine. If that continues the 2030 version will be £23,000. Bike prices have gone beyond ridiculous.

Very interesting subject this one.

I saw a Facebook marketplace post the other day, for a Specialized Levo SL Comp in carbon fibre. "Brand new, still in box" and "unwanted christmas present," £6,500rrp reduced to £5,500. Not to cast aspersions, but it was a very generic "middle class" lifestyle portrayed in the person's Facebook profile. Can't help but feel there is a hell of a lot of people got thoroughly carried away with spending bounceback loans and furlough wages.

At the same time, complete bikes might be running out of stock but frames are maybe looking harder to shift. Sponsored post popped up in my insta the other night with 2021 Santa Cruz frames getting offered at 10-30% discount.

My 1996 Santa Cruz Heckler was the thick end of 3k new

I think the new offerings are pretty good value

But a higher rate taxpayer can buy a 3k bike for a little over 1.5k. Interest free over a year. No further charges. I bet a few of those end up for sale at a ‘profit’

That's £5750 in todays money (2.8%/ year inflation). I've observed my bike model going up 15% a year over the last 3. That's what I am meaning with bike prices. They seem to be going up a lot faster than just the rate of inflation these days.

Were those at RRP? The most recent aluminium 5010 frame is selling for 1900 today, though it is discontinued.

Quite. When the folk who bought the bikes because of lockdown realise how much of a kick in the nuts they’ll get if they want to sell them, they’ll mostly probably hang on to the bike.

Agree. It’s a mental game, and most won’t want to lose all that money instantly. Instead they’ll keep it for a few years, and then sell after not using it. That’s how most bikes go!

So, yes there will be some bargains - but it’ll be in 3-5 years’ time.

The challenge is probably finding other components in stock to build the frame into a bike!
