Flat pedals for road bike
Discussion
Afternoon,
A few years ago I bought my partner a road bike. I also bought some shoes with the intention of training her to use clipless pedals on my indoor bike.
As usual it’s not materialised, so on the odd occasion she does use it she continues to use the terrible plastic pedals that are provided free.
I could push the issue but she’s not a particularly confident cyclist and has a tendency to be a little passive aggressive when the mood takes her. So I fear I will end up blamed for a tumble that could be avoided.
So I’d like to just buy some decent quality flat pedals to replace the plastic ones, any suggestions?

I feel your pain. I managed to get the missus using SPD on zwift during lockdown, and she adopted them for road use. Then a girlfriend stated are not worried using them, blah, blah, blah. Since then the fear of falling off, ending up under a lorry etc has made it a non starter. Even being whacked in the shins won't persuade her.A few years ago I bought my partner a road bike. I bought some dual pedals - Shimano Pedals PD-T8000. To date, the SPD has not been used by her.
I'm not too worried about folding pedals on the Brompton, so occasionally swap them on to that. Generally i use Shimano GR500, or MKS pedal Always Easy Superior shipped via ebay ('Superior' make these quick release) - i have a good sized 13, or 50 Euro in a Sidi so I prefer the bigger platform.
If the bearings in the current pedals are still running nicely then just keep using them until they wear out.
I can understand the need for a quality studded flat pedal for MTB and off road use, but if it’s just an hour or two on the road bike, who cares. Stick with what you’ve got and buy cake instead.

Have only just fitted them and had a quick ride around the garden. Can't see my feet slipping off them. Although, like a donkey I think I've managed to damage the thread on one side

Careful with threading them, I've had a whole pedal rip out if the crank because it had been cross threaded

Think I'm passed the point of safe return and have f
ked the thread tbh.
Pedals were meant to be temporary anyway, but I'll need to sort the mess I've probably made to the crank threads.
Bike shop was able to retap mine with a new thread which saved me a bit of £ in getting a new crank set

Similar to OP I tried to help MrsPB use clipless on her road bike many years ago, and failed several times. When she decided to have another go a few years later, I used MTB SPD pedals (XT) and shoes, and the result was so much better.
The pedals are easier to adjust as to how tight they clamp, and the release is simpler too. I’ve been using them for decades off road and have not had a problem getting my foot out the pedal when needed at short notice!
Might be worth a try

These or something similar. It's all anyone needs for road cycling*. No reason for giant opal fruits with a million screws sticking out.k
Edited to add – *unless going clipless
