Pointless bike upgrades….How do you resist??

I’ve had my Specialized Creo for coming up to a couple of years now, it’s done barely 700 miles, I like riding it, but simply don’t have time. I don’t race or worry about time/power, just like to ride. I do however find my self drawn to the ‘aero wheel’ concept and deeper rims. The Creo has ‘Road boost’ axles so I cannot use some old (but nice) Shimano DuraAce wheelset from my old Trek. The R470 wheelset that comes with the Creo is OK, but I do wonder about getting some nicer wheels given how good the rest of the bike it.

Managed to come across some nice looking, carbon, semi-deep wheel sets in Road boost fitting. By the time I add in both wheels, new rotors, tires, new cassette (I would keep the old wheels for gravel/commuting), it’s probably going to be £1500+. I don’t have any issue with wasting money on bikes, but spending this amount on something totally unnecessary, for a bike I barely ride, just seems mad……..But equally the temptation is there, and pulls me in.

Can anyone share a way to banish/control unnecessary bike spending???

Regular commute I see s works,deep carbon rims,rapha clobber,over sized jockey wheels saving watt? All to roll round regents park in a pack for an hour,makes me appreciate my 20+ year old rock hopper,I do have a carbon road bike,rim brakes 105 more than good enough,I just see most of the new stuff as marketing which is pointless to most riders

I look at it as a matter of priorities. Are you able to get more bang for your buck spending elsewhere? Including say early retirement by ploughing it into a mortgage?

I struggle with the same thing you do OP, got quite lucky recently as I had some in house branded wheels on my gravel bike that failed and the manufacturer had stopped selling them, so offered me a set of Zipp 303 firecrests at a big discount. I have 2 rim braked bikes that I have managed to get some nice wheels second hand.

Look at it this way, as my old man says, you could be spending it on fags and booze!
