Knocked Off - any experience of claiming from Bikmo
Discussion
On my lunchtime ride a car turned across the road into a drive in front of me … alas he didn’t see me.
I was doing about 20Mph and I collided with his nearside wing, went over the handle as and landed on his bonnet.
I am currently sat in A&E after my wife insisted I get checked out.
Although the bike looks i have been told that it is nigh on impossible to guarantee they the frame /forks / carbon front wheel is undamaged.
The driver wants to avoid insurance ….
I am not after ‘compo’ I just want to be cycling again as soon as possible (assuming I feel ok in a few days)
What is the best way to proceed? I have insurance with Bikmo and I am a member of British Cycling.

I would want at the very least a scan of the frame etc by a bike CF expert. Last thing you want is something failing in future, for example the steerer tube.
I'm sure the driver is keen to avoid insurance; they probably think its a bike so worth a few hundred.
A friend had a similar experience, however the driver then quibbled at the replacement cost of his £3k frame which got cracked!
If I were you I'd speak to the legal team via British Cycling and get their advice. While I applaud you for not wanting 'compo' its only right you are compensated for any genuine injury or financial loss and it may take time for issues to manifest.
Were the police involved?

Having been in a similar situation I'd be going through British cycling's legal helpline. The cost of the bike, time off work and rehabilitation costs quickly add up. I used them a few years ago and they were using Leigh Day then, specialist cycling team and handled everything very well indeed.
I'd advise getting on to his insurance, and contacting your own insurers as well.
I was knocked off a few years back by an elderly driver. Thought I was uninjured but turned out to have a fractured skull and several broken vertebrae. Bike was a write off also.
I wasn't insured/legal covered personally, and got an ambulance chaser firm on the case as his insurers were not cooperative at all.

GO THROUGH INSURANCE
Prioritise you and your needs.
Forget about the driver.
Don't settle until you have had time to heal and reflect.
Ask for interim support for medical and physio needs.
What does that even mean?Prioritise you and your needs.

How does the OP ask for interim support for his medical needs? He’s in A&E.
I claimed through Bikmo during covid (so not sure how relevant my expereince will be)
I had a someone pull out infront of me on a blind corner whilst I was doing 20mph ish
Frame had some cosmetic damage and some dark lines appear (carbon) and as all the carbon repairers were shut, Bikmo paid out for a new bike (based on the value of my one and what my LBS told them)
They also paid out for my undamaged wheels as I went from a rim brake bike to disc.
My claim went in on a friday, I had the payout in my account the following wednesday (£4.5k fwiw)
Claim was easy, no back and forth and they were great.

How are you feeling today? What was the outcome of your visit to A&E? I hope there was nothing more serious found after the adrenaline had worn off.
You have legal advice from BC and insurance from Bikmo, use what you are paying for to get you on the road again and not worry about the car driver. The driver not seeing you and causing the crash is all on him. Wanting to avoid insurance is also not your concern.

You are a BC member. They handle these claims everyday through their insurance and legal team. I’ve used them and they are great. It’s what you’ve paid for.
In my case I claimed for a replacement bike on my bike insurance, and i had private medical care and needed several operations. All of this was reclaimed by Leigh Day, the BC solicitors. As I was so injured, it also paid for a recumbent trike, because cycling was my mode of transport to and from work and only had the use of one arm for four months. And a reasonable compensation.
Hope you are healing fast, I can tell you from experience that going over the bonnet is a LOT better than a dead stop into the B pillar of an SUV. Think ride into a wall at 20mph. Not recommended.

Thanks for the advice ... I have started filling out a claim with Bikmo - just need to get a report from the LBS.
I have clearly escaped lightly judging by some of the responses - there should'nt be and lasting injuries; A&E x-rayed my left hand as my fingers are quite bruised and did head & neck injury assessment. The Dr had non concerns and I was told my sore neck will improve after a few days.
Today I am generally feeling ok - have a bit of a stiff neck and a bruise on my leg, Planned to go for my regular gravle ride ealier but I discovered my helmet is broken - it did its job well as I was unaware that I had hit my head.
