I currently run Maxxis Forekasters - 29 x 2.35, 120tpi on an Orange Alpine 5

I've been happy with them but they are now quite worn so time for some news ones. They seem difficult to get now and seem expensive.

....any recommendations up to £35 per tyre ideally. I mostly do XC on stone, peat and mud, linked by bits of blacktop (live in the Lakes).

Cheers

I've just gone from Racing Ralph and Ray to Vittoria Barzo and Mezcal for XC racing. Not too sure I can tell the difference really but a lot of racers seem to ride them. Expensive though

Some cheap Barzo and others here, lots of other Vittoria. Not tried the Barzo myself.
The Mazza, Mota and Martello are decent.
The Enduro casings are heavy as a heavy thing.

Those Barzos look decent, may give them a try - light as well, and cheap.

For the Lakes, with stone/peat/mud plus short blacktop links, I would avoid a pure XC race tyre. I would go grippier front, faster rear.

Front: Schwalbe Nobby Nic Performance 29 x 2.35/2.4
Rear: Continental Cross King ShieldWall 29 x 2.3

Interesting, I'll give that some thought - I've never considered varying front and back tyres but it makes some sense.

I've always run XC tyres so I'm use to how they behave but having some more bite on the front is appealing.

If you want something more aggressive, the Mazza, Martello etc can be had in budget with trail casings on other sites.

I’ve got a Mazza on the front of my e-bike and it’s a good tyre.

Myself I tend to Prefer a Schwalbe Magic Mary or Albert. You won’t get those in budget and the Mary doesn’t fit your requirements I think.

A good fast rear, if you can find one, it’ll probably be in budget.
Schwalbe Rock Razor, surprisingly grippy for a semi slick.
