07 XT and XTR - cool new feature
Discussion
Had a play with a proto XT shifter the other evening. It's basically like the SRAM X7/X9/X0 type where you can shift both up and down with your thumb. I've got X7 shifters on my Commencal and this feature is brilliant. Very easy to use, especially if you're braking for a corner and need to shift as your fingers are free to brake.
Highly recommended upgrade

How does it work ?
No idea.
The REALLY freaky thing is you can push the smaller lever forward to shift... OR pull it back! So either direction of the smaller lever changes the gear the same way. Bit

Knowing Shimano it'll be like a Swiss watch inside and work as well

Blimey - I hadn't absorbed that bit of info when Neil was telling me about it; I'd assumed it was just a new shifter that when paired with a rapid-rise rear mech worked in the 'classic' manner, i.e. finger to change up and thumb to change down.

How much would this sort of kit cost...
Eerrmm dunno as its not in the shops yet.
Probs looking at a couple of hundred for a full gearing setup. Good place to see prices for parts is www.chainreactioncycles.com

It must have some sort of internal cam arrangement, those bods at shimano know what they are doing, no doubt it will be great....though I wont be rushing to change, never had a problem changing down and braking with rapidfire - with brakes as good as they are now
I dunno, Rapidrise does work much better, with the upshifts benig really sweet.
This will just make them even nicer

True - but with a rapidrise rear mech you'd need to use your braking finger to change down, so I can see why they've done this.

I'me getting a bit confused here, but I think the idea of these new shifters is to take advantage of the better shifting of rapidrise, but still allow the rider to adapt their riding style by allowing any option in terms of shifting direction.
Ithink that answers that query?
