looking at getting some and it seems the LED ones are no god for seeing where you are going!
as we intend to take our bikes with us on our next holiday in darkest Yorkshire on country roads at night (back from the pub!), should we look at getting Halogen front lights rather than LED's?
thank you

For fit and forget you can use Dynamo lights, modern dynamos have very little drag and hub dynamos are the best.
For Halogen lights and value for money you can't beat Twin headlamp Smart lights the battery is a bit heavy but the ability to be able to see where you are going at a decent speed cancels that out so to speak
available for £30.00 from Bike plus www.bikeplus.co.uk/
I have a set that have had regular use for four years, great value for money will last around 9 hours on 2.4 watt or two hours on 10 watt slightly less with both on, you really only need main beam for fast descents or off road.
For a good list of comparisons check out this page on the Audax UK website;

How much are you looking to spend and what sort of battery life are you looking for?
I'm assuming that when you say "LED lights are no good for seeing where you are going" you mean the £5 safety lights rather than "proper" LED lights (£100+).
Top of the range systems are all LED / HID these days.
