After selling my VERY heavy planet x jumpbike, and slowly gaining weight
I want a bike again as we now have a nice big garage for me to keep it in.
The question is..what style and brand to go for..As my realy background on bikes has been bombproof DH gear, not lightweight stuff.
I live in Kingston so I guess a roadbike would be the most sensible option as I will be mostly cycling around the place, and also over the summmer months cycline back home to hampshire and just trying to get out and explore. Whislt getting fit like I used to be.
Question is, do you think a fully fledged roadbike is a better bet than a light mountain bike?
And what would be a good bet new or second hand for around 500 quid?
Dont mind using ebay if anyone see`s a good one..
Hope you can help I really want to get back into it

Well if your going to be sticking religously to tarmac an all out roadi is an option.

Google is your friend to find bike deals.
As a start Pauls Cycles usually has a lot of good deals as do Merlin.
Don't forget that buying locally from an LBS will be easier if you have any problems / queries with the bike. They'll probally give a discount on any accessories you buy with the bike to.

I have an 07 rockhopper disk myself, which replaced a 04 hardrock pro, which replaced an 01 hardrock comp.
I also second buying from a local shop, even if its not overly local to you (depends what you want, and whats near you). Not only will you have a solid place to go back to should it go wrong. But also it is important where feasable to support local shops.

Me too!! 07 Rockhopper comp disc.
They are cracking but could do with road tyres on if that's what you'll be doing the most.
Mines was £750 though (but through cycle2work scheme so cheaper!)
Although tbh, the fasttracks that came with it arnt bad if you run them a good presure. They are cracking but could do with road tyres on if that's what you'll be doing the most.

- Mine was £650, paid £580 and got £30 ish worth of gear with it, gloves, etc.

If you are going to be riding tarmac get a road bike.
I have been a mountain biker since I was small, and have come round to the simple fact that I have a lot more fun when riding on tarmac on a road bike.
Don't get me wrong- I love my full suss Cannondale Rush, but whilst it is great at getting me round Brechfa it is rubbish at getting me from London to Winchester.
Get an affordable road bike- the Spesh Allez is pretty much all you could want from an entry level roadie.
£499 new, and after riding mine for just under a year I upgraded to a Cannondale System Six.
Ebay is your friend here, IF you have confidence in your mechanical skills.
My System Six was £2,649 new, I got it (with 48 miles on the clock) for £1,200 via eBay...
