Hello im new to the bikes forum (basically because i like to ride them but dont quite understand the technicalities). I used to get out and ride quite a bit and would like to again, mainly riding to and from work and the occasional weekend or evening trip up into the hills (Guisborough Woods etc for those up in the north east).

I currently have a Muddy Fox Alu Lite that has perfectly good, gears, tyres and brakes and is light enough to amke it a good ride. Ive not used to for a year but got it out last night put air in the tyres oiled it and it works fine.

It currently has solid front forks that I straightened after a misguided downhill run a few years ago, it also needs new rims as the one that are on are beyond straightening.

I like the bike as im pretty sure since I accquired it (Free) Ive spent £90 on it, including the new road/trail tyres last year. The trouble is that when I priced new wheels (at my local halfords) they were going to charge £69 fitted.

I noticed though when I was in that I can have something like this I'm pretty sure this would suit my needs but would like to know what others think about me buying this and stripping the Muddy Fox for parts, or buying suspension forks and new rims to bring it up to a similar spec?

I'm no expert, but I wouldn't trust riding on a pair of forks that have been straightened - they will have lost all of their integrity, so I would go about replacing the forks sharpish.

A £69 (fitted) pair of wheels are going to be pretty heavy and really not very strong.

To be honest, you will probably end up outlaying £200 - £300 for anywhere near half decent wheels and forks. If that is the case, I would seriously consider changing the bike & getting on of these or similar for really not a lot more money.

£69 wheels from Halfords are likely to be very basic Alu wheels wihich are heavy and perhaps not even strong. As for quoting the price 'Fitted' are they having a laugh?! Just how difficult is it to drop a quick release lever into a fork?

If you want the wheels then I suggest going somewhere like Merlin or Chain Reaction and getting some low-end Shimano wheels which will be vastly superior. As for rigid forks you can pick some of these up for £44 http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?Mod...
If your loving the rigid downhills then these should take all the abuse as I agree that bending the forks back aren't a good idea.
