Mountain bike advise please.

We have decided to get fit, to aid this we (wife and I) have decided cycling would be a good start so we need to purchase these.
Now.. what do the PH masses recommend for the following:
Mainly flat terrain (river/canal banks) some roadwork and the occasional foray to Coed Y Brenin or however it is spelt for a bit of real stuff!
I guess a hardtail but what make/model? light would be good and tough, remember we are both middle aged wannabees not downhill legends!
Over to you chaps, and thanks.

All good advice in here for the Specialized Hardrock.
Great bikes that can be riden for long distances, but also take a bit of a beating when necessary.
Tyres will be the key for your use. 2.2" knobblies might look the part, but will be tiring on tow paths .... that said, you'll get fitter quicker.

Thanks, I will have a look at the Specilaized stuff then !
Had a look at the Hardrock, sounds just the ticket, off to try and find one to have a good look at this weekend, any recommendations for shops in Manchester?
Thanks again, great adviCe !
