Try and get a pair of Shimano Deore discs. They're a piece of p!ss to look after and very reliable so you'll probably not need to bleed them.

Sorry if this is a daft question, but what are the 'STW' classifieds?

Check it daily, huge amount good cheap gear changing hands. On my way to pick up my £275 one year old Fox 36's tonight biggrin

As for brakes, Avid Juicies or Shimanos - Shimano being my preference for a couple of reasons. No spazzy alignment things, no horrid brake fluid. Easier to bleed. Cheap, work great.

From Deore up to XTR, there all good value.

Sorry Mr Brightside, yeah, www.singletrackworld.com classfieds. Loads of stuff appears on their daily and alot of it is bargaintastic.

I recommend Formula Oro K18 brakes if you can find them within your budget.

Why not just get some bigger rotors? I'm assuming you've got 160mm front and rear. You should be able to get a 185mm rear rotor and a 203mm front rotor off STW for £20 - £30 for the pair. Maybe even less. You'll also need new calliper mounts. You can get two new Avid ones for about £13 from Wiggle or CRC.

Does your frame and forks have IS mounts or does the fork have a Post mount? If you have IS mounts front and rear then two rear 185mm IS mounts is what you'll need. In fact, I have a Shimano IS front mount (203mm) and an Avid IS rear mount (185mm) if you want swapsies?

I'm 14-stone. On my trail bike I run 203mm up front and 160mm rear - looks odd but works - with my Juicy Sevens. On my Commuter / Tourer I have BB-7's 160mm front / 140mm rear and these work great even fully ladened (40Kgs odd).

This way you'll get huge improvement in performance but only spend £30 - £40. Don't forget that if you hydraulic then you may need a bleed kit too.

Mans got a point.

Dinner plates all round on mine. People scoff - but they sure stop well.

Shimano brake mounts are only a fiver nowadays.
