Would i get away with putting some Geax 2.3 tires on some Mavic XC717 rims? Mavic recommend up to 2.1 for 717 rims, but i have read it may only be an issue if running a low psi?

PS - my riding is mainly XC/fun in the woods - nothing too extreme

Why bother with such wide tyres then? 2.1's ought to be more than enough shirley?

I use 2.1s on Mavic 717 rims for long-distance XC/general farting around and have no problems. Handle small (50cm) drops and rock gardens fine as well as forest trails and landings from water bars. But I'm not the most extreme rider here...

The thing is i have some Panaracer 2.1s on there at the moment, but they look really thin compared to my other bikes with 2.1s or 2.2s on (is it a common thing that panaracers tend to come out a bit slimmer than the norm?) So i was browsing for some new tires and quite liked the look of some Geax 2.3s and they are at a very good price

I ran 2.35's on 717 rims, worked ok didn't think anything of it till...... I ran the same tyre on a wider rim then you realise it's a comprimise, the bike feels more stable.

cheers Atom,

what were the main differences/improvements when you went to bigger rims? was it cornering, big bumps or something else?

cornering stability was the main difference I noticed. But I hadn't noticed it an issue with the thinner rims until I made the change ignorance is bliss and all that smile

Yeah, it's weird how some tyres come up thinner than others for the same width rating. I've got some 2.1 Maxxis Larssen TT's for example which are alot fatter than the 2.1 Maxxis Medusa's on my other bike. I think mud tyres come up thinner due to the job they have to do, whereas summer tyres can afford to be that bit fatter.

I think i will give the 2.3's a go on the 717 rims and see how i get on. I really do think my current panaracers i have are a tifle too thin for my riding, as i have had a few risky moments when doing small jumps and tricky trails.
