im thinking of getting a bike again.

as much as i love my car, it costs me a fortune, just for the small trip to work.

i plan to use a bike to get to and from work, maybe not everyday, but we shall see.

i live about 2 miles away, the route is one big hill, the morning would be fine, the ride home is worrying me!

im a big bloke, and not exactly very fit, so my plan is to save a few pennys, and loose a few pounds!

what bike should i get? i dont really want one of those ones with skinny wheels and bendy handle bars.
one that i could also use off road at weekends would be good?
anything else i need to think about?

over to you lot....!

Whats the budget?

Frame wise you want to start looking at inside leg -12 inches for road bieks, -14 for mountainbikes.
Though the frames geometry etc means as much to fit and comfort.

Road bikes have no suspension, thin tyres liht frames etc and arnt up to off road, so your probably looking at a hybrid or mountain bike.

You need a lot of cash for a full suspension bike thats worth riding, one with decent front sus should be available from 250-300 quid - look at trek (4300 etc) GT, Giant, Specialised etc.

For mostly commuting your going to want smoother tyres but IMO 2 miles is about 20 mins peddling tops so I wouldnt be too woried.

As for uphill its harder sure but its only 2 miles whats the climb? MTB have tons of grunty gears to give you a help.

get yourself a cheap hardtail mountain bike, preferably with lockable front suspension, some nice road tyres and bobs your uncle,
I use my mountain bikes for sponsored bike rides 60 miles plus and if you get the gearing right you can keep up with some of the not so good road bikes!

As above - sounds like a half decent hard tail (front suspecsion only) MTB would do you. You can get decent starter ones for around £300, obviously much less if second hand.

Lockable forks as menioned above are a godsend for roads and especially going up hills on teh road, but may not be provided in teh £300 price bracket for a new bike.

Every time the suspension moevs its taking energy from your peddling.

So lockable suspension helps efficiency, especialy on the flat and uphill.

A lot of decent shocks have a small amount of travel when locked (for comfort) and gate which allows fill travel if you hit something seriously bumpy (this can sometimes be adjustable too).
