I have just got back into mountain biking, currently I have Tioga Extreme tyres on my bike but they are starting to get a bit worn so the time has come to start thinking about replacement.

What make of tyre and model should I be looking at, I would say that 60% of my riding is on the gravel tracks in the New Forest with the family but the other 40% is on the downhill trails at Queen Elizabeth Park in Petersfield

Any advice appreciated

As for make, there are so many out there it really is down to personal choice/budget really. On my bikes i have Panaracer, Geax and Michelin, all of whom do tyres at good budget prices i.e. £10 to £15 each. My riding does not justify paying £20 to £30 a tyre

As for size, you probably need either 2.1 or 2.2s bearing in mind your useage, although saying that i have just put 2.3s onto a bike which is used pretty much the same as yours, and they are fine for gentle use as well as more extreme stuff.

In a nutchell, i choose tyres on price, performance (look at reviews), steel wired (cheaper) and where poss puncture resistant. There are loads out there in the £10 to £15 price bracket - start with the three makes above - i am sure more will post suggesting other makes too.

Thanks for the advice, I have just seen a pair of Panaracer Fire XC Pro for £30 which seems good value as most of the ones on the internet are £25 each (ish) so may give these a go

I have some of those. They are a good tyre so should do you well. £15 a pop is a good price too

I still use Tioga Factory DH's, 2.1 on the front and 2.3 on the back.
