In May I bought a new mountain bike (Scott Genius 20) and since then I've been playing with the dark side (I've always been a roadie until now) and having a lot of fun!!

This has been one of my regular routes (not filmed by me);

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x660hh_descente-e...

The other day the rear brake (Avid Juicy 5) failed on a descent (at a hairpin) with quite painfull results.

When I got back home I had a look to find all the brake fluid had leaked around from behind one of the pistons.

I shop had an initial look and said that the there was a fault with the caliper and should eb returned to the manufacturer.

I've spoken to the shop where I bought the bike and they've said that before Scott do anything they want to see the brake.

SO what's the collectives view on whether they will replace it or am I just as well to buy a new brake system and put it down as the cost of riding?

(the brake had done a total of about 250miles)

I would say that you were definitely entitled to have it replaced under warranty ...........however, if Scott insist on seeing the caliper before replacing it, you need to put a price on cycling - how much for a replacement, and how long is your bike going to be out of action?

ETA - is this what you need? http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwPNLqrymode.a4p?...

Andy - great find, thank you....that's exactly what I need.......I had only found full brake systems with discs at £75 but a new caliper for only £15 is pin money...worth getting if only for a spare!!

Now that is a great find. Tempted to get a spare myself! BTW, that calliper will also work with all Juicy and Code brake levers.

Sounds like the seals have gone - which is a servicable item. You should get a replacement under warranty but it seems odd that 'Scott UK' won't take a Scott dealers word for it on such a 'minor' warranty claim.

an update.....been back to the dealer and he's sending it back under warranty...fortunately I had to come back to the UK so could pop it back to him...........he's not 100% sure that Scott will replace as it appears as though a pad was missing before the failure.....I can't tell for sure the sequence of event s as the first time I knew anything was amiss was as I headed into the hairpin and realised I wasn't going to stop and shortly before my face hit the road (quite literally!!)

It's just me, and my Shimano fetish, but if there was the slightest chance that a pad had dropped out then there's no way on God's clean Earth that I'd be using the same design of caliper ever again. Even if it was free.

So, seeing as there is the possibilty that any brake pad can fall out, which brake system are you going to be using then?

Its not Scott's problem, it will be Fisher Outdoor the Avid/SRAM distributor who need to see it.

Although it shouldn't fail that soon it can be difficult to get a warranty replacement on a serviceable part subject to wear and tear (seals).

They should do it, your bike might be out of action for 10 days or so though.

I think it is Scotts issue as there's privity of contract...so I bought the bike from a shop, my contract is with the shop, the shop bought the bike (complete) from Scott so their contract is with Scott, Scott bought the components (Brakes, gears, wheels, chainset, etc etc) from the various suppliers so their contract is with the component suppliers.

Therefore, for a warranty claim I claim from the shop, the shop passes it onto Scott who pass it onto Avid.

The issue is the cuase of the failure; it could have been "misuse" (ie if I did some poor maintenance and dislodged the pad when changing a wheel or didn't take reasonable care)

Most of the time the shop will contact Fisher direct, Scott will not keep avid spares as stock and there is no need to involve them, it would just take longer to get sorted.

I work in a bike shop, if I phone a bike manufacturer with a problem relating to a specific component, they will tell me to contact the distributor of the component.

Good luck on getting it sorted!

Me?

I've only ever had one set of disc brakes, '08 XTs, and I probably don't tax those terribly much, but if they dropped a pad for any reason other than my ineptitude I'd be looking for something else.

OFF TOPIC:

Lovely descent, you are very lucky to have that on your doorstep!

I was biking round Morzine, Les Gets & Chamonix the week before last with some friends. I'm planning on spending a month in the area next year (doing natural XC routes: Tour de Portes du Soleil etc and in addition to all the man made stuff: Morzine, Les Gets etc).

That vid has really got my imagination going again: I'll make sure I fit it in.

Will do. I picked up a great guide whilst I was out - 'Portes du Soliel: 53 MTB routes'. Some amazing looking routes in there, and really shows how you can link in the lifts for the various resorts to cover a lot of ground with an MTB.

Really exciting stuff: should keep me motivated to keep my bike fitness up over the winter.

In June there's an event called "Passporte du Soleil" during which you do all the runs in a day.....81km long with about 500m of climbing and 15km of descent.....fantastic event when you see all of the Portes du soleil!!

Thats good payback for 500m of climbing! I'll put that down for 2010.
