Had a quick search but could not find any other discussions on it...

I have a baby daughter who will be 1yr old next month. I want to take her out on my bike but not sure what the best method is ?

Does anyone have experiance with this that can point me in the right direction ?

If it makes a difference i have a spcialized fixed tail mountainf bike

We have got a 3 yr old & a 1 year old and have done the fixed seat on the back (for sale.......) and have just bought a trailer.

I regret not buying the trailer sooner as you can cycle for a lot longer & take more crap with you.

We do worry about cars, but try to stick to country lanes and my wife always cycles just behind it in a high viz jacket.

Have just started taking my 11-month-old daughter out on a seat that fits between the stem and the seatpost. She seems to like it, and though its a bit bulky at first, once you get going its not really in your way. Like the fact that she can see where we're going and I can see her.

Good for mountain bikes and from what I hear from others, also good for light off-road once they've got used to it.

I asked a similar question back in June, (sorry I don't know how to link to the post0 it may be worth searching it out.

I would recommend looking at Merlin as at the time they were the best price, and the seat arrived at 7am the day after ordering.

I use a Co-Pilot Limo seat

Cons of a rack mounted seat like this: No suspension, so little 'un feels all the lumps & bumps. A seatpost-mounted seat will be more comfortable.

Pros: Much more secure, for some reason I just can't bring myself to trust the seatpost-mounted ones.

Cons of any seat: Heavy, CoG is very high, bike has a tendency to lift the front wheel, stopping distance is increased.

Pros of any seat: Child is much closer to you and can chat to you. Bike is easier to thread through gaps / traffic etc than a trailer.

Yes. Assuming you leave the rack bolted to the bike, the seat slides in from the rear and then there's a catch to do up at the back of the seat/rack and a safety strap that you loop around the seatpost in case the catches fail.

They are quite enclosed in the seat, so they'd be unlucky to bang their head in a fall but for safety's sake I insist that mine wear helmets when in the seat. They're ok with it as they're "just like daddy" then.

Plus it gets them used to having a helmet on

We have the Hamax Siesta on a Scott Scale, which seems to work well enough after a small amount of getting used to. Leave the bracket on the frame, and the seat goes on or off in seconds. If we were doing it again, I might be inclined to get a rack mounted seat (if you can fit one to your bike) because you then have the ability to use panniers to carry all the stuff that babies / toddlers need without resorting to a rucksack.

Personally I would not be comfortable with a trailer because they are just not as visible as a cyclist, being very low. Given the country lanes where we live, and how close cars tend to get before overtaking, it fills me with dread that I cannot always see what is happening behind. I would only feel comfortable with the other half riding behind the trailer.

It is better than you think with the trailer behind. We didn't buy one for the same reasons as you & then borrowed one & was very pleased with it. If you are ever in Shropshire, let me know!

i use a trailer on either of my bikes, my little one has loved it since she was 10 months, i got handed down one of the chairs that sit on the top tube and every time i try to put her in it she cry's and kicks away!

she loves sitting back and enjoying watching the dog running next to her.
