Hey all.
I'm currently riding a Yeti asr as seen in this pic

I absolutely love riding it but............
I've been riding in North wales a few times recently at Coed y brenin, marin trail penmacno etc and I think i'd like something a bit more heavy duty for the faster singletrack.Problem is I sold a Commencal meta 55 xt to get the Yeti which would of been ideal for the type of riding i'm enjoying now
I'm planning to visit Wales once a month to ride at the different trail centres and some other trails around the Snowdonia area and i'll also be paying Scotland a visit next year, otherwise i'll be riding in the South east, where the Yeti is perfectly adequate.
My problem is what to get,do I get another meta?Or do I get a Santa cruz nomad?Or do i go for something completely different?Or is the Yeti man enough?
Any suggestions would be gratefully received
Thanks
Colin

Nomads are great bikes. I know my mate loves his - but in order to compete with a Meta 5.5 it needs to be specced with an air shock.
The Meta is the slightly more XC'y out of the two, but having razzed mine to bits, and sold it, and kind of wished I hadn't (and so gone and brought a Meta 4x instead) I think that says a lot.
You do know that Commencals are the cool thing to have on here

Edited to add: My mates got a few problems with bearings wearing out etc over the year or so he's had it - not too good. However the Meta, although the bearings were not the best quality, always seemed to stay working well.
Don't take this as critisism, more as feedback from two people with the frames in question who have used their frames hard for a year at the Mega etc together...

and mine was great but was just different to what I was used to so I sold up before I gave it a chance
I've been looking at an 08 5.5.1 which is tempting but is also probably sold now.I did see a few Meta's in Wales this weekend but also plenty of santa cruz's all looked perfect for what i'm after, not sure i'll think that when i'm riding them up the hills tho

Without wishing to sound like I'm trolling, of all the centres you name there is nothing there that can't be ridden flat out on what you've got. The Yeti is an awesome bike, and more than enough for those trail centres. Now if you are talking about Cwm Carn etc, or some of the bigger Scottish centres then some more travel/slacker angles may be better. However, if you're only doing those centres once a month and spending the rest of the time in the South East, then why bulk up the bike for the majority of your riding?

You're not - its a fair comment - I found my 5.5 was too close a bike to my DH steed in terms of capability. You're right to point it out - its one of the reasons for getting my 4x as I know it'll cope with everything...However thats not to say that it wasn't a very capable bike. Also, some people just like having a shed load of extra capability - bit like saying that a Porsche 997 GT2 is not warranted when you can razz around in a basic 997 C2 - some people just like going the extra bit

Very good point,I do plan to go to Cwn carn soon,i must stress that this is not a what bike to replace my Yeti thread, but a what bike to use along side my yeti thread. You are right the Yeti is an awesome bike and one which I can't see myself ever selling,I do feel however that something a bit more beefy would be of benefit at the centres i've mentioned.

Ah, now that you say it's an extra bike, well, the sky's the limit really! Time for some serious spending I would have thought!
That opens up a lot of options to you now, with the Commencal's that Neil has pointed out, plus other interesting toys such as a Scott Ransom, Trek Remedy, new GT..... hell, it's a veritable smorgasbord of options!
While you're at it, might as well get a singlespeed hardtail as well, so you don't wreck the nice bikes in the winter slop.

I'm considering chopping my Blur LT in for an '09 Nomad/a.n.other 6" travel bike at present. Don't take this as critisism, more as feedback from two people with the frames in question who have used their frames hard for a year at the Mega etc together...
Having just had all the bearings changed on my Blur after one of the shock eye bearings completely collapsing (
), I can vouch for how financially painful it can be (£40 for the bearing kit - £70 labour) and don't really want to have to pay out all the time for new bearings. A friend of mine with an '07 Nomad seems to go through bearings for fun, but then others (with perhaps a bit more mechanical sympathy) make theirs last somewhat longer. The '09 Nomad, like the Blur LT2 comes with grease ports in the lower link which when coupled with the carbon upper link should mean maintenance being that little bit easier and hopefully less costly.
S.
Not sure what the trails that have been mentioned are like, but another XC-type of longer-travel frame is a Yeti 575 - just the long-travel version of the ASR. Capable downhill, but an absolute flyer uphill and on singletrack, I can't think of many places I'd ride where my talent was in excess of the ability of my 575. New (08-onwards) frames are corkers.
Not had a go on a Commencal, and wouldn't mind, but have tried SC Blur LT and Nomad. Yeti just fits me better.
