Currently I've got Magura's on my DMR Hardtail and I'm thinking of changing to discs.

I know I dont necessarily NEED the V2's with Vented Discs but for their bling factor they rock.

Anyone got any experiences or am I best just going for Mono's or similar?

At 554g the V2 is over 100g heavier than a Mono, though it's my jump and street bike so weight isn't that important...

I can't think of a single reason why you would need them on a hardtail.

In fact, I can't think of a single reason why you would need them on any MTB. Vented rotors? on an MTB?

There are better brakes out there, that are cheaper, lighter, just as powerfull and probably more reliable too.

What would you recommend?

Personally, something by Formula.

Although the new Avid Elixir (sp) seem to be getting some good reviews.

Or for strat up simple, reliable & easy to get parts for brakes, some Shimano's. If its a street/jump bike they are probably going to take a bit of a beating anyway.

IIRC the floating rotors only come in 203mm, would be a little OTT on an HT regardless.

Another thing I like is reliability.

My Magura's a 13 yrs old and have never been serviced (!) yet still work perfectly. I just buy new soft trials pads when they're ready.

Saying that I think the front has been ble when I pulled a hose out, I can't remember if that was on my Monty.

OK...i'll be probably be hung, drawn & quartered by the experts, but in terms of low maintainence and good performance, I'd go for Shimano XTRs...

There, I said it.

<------- runs for cover....

David

Ps..I've only got hopes to compare against, I just found them too fiddley and higher maintainence.

I have two sets of Hope moto V2's but with standard discs, I did not see the point of the vented ones for my riding needs, but my friend has vented, says he can notice a difference. I however am really happy with my brakes, they replaced hope C2's, I suppose they are a bit bling, but I got mine for function and they are very good

I really rate the cheaper shimano ones, they work really well and are stunning value.

I have the hope micro mini's with floating rotors. They are SUPERB. Plenty of feel, no fade and very controlable.

Thanks for all your replies. I think I'll just get the Mono's or Mini's then.

However it looks like my old Magura's are staying for at least another month as the Elise decided to knacker up one of it's rear brakes and my mrs thinks the money for the Hopes is better spent going on holiday to the Caribbean...

Only experience I've got is on my LBS's test Session88 where the lever has already decided to go to Bikeheaven. Didn't last very long at all frown

Personally love Shimano brakes. Used for years. Reliable, powerful and relatively cheap. Happy Days.

Weight penalty?

I must admit I've scratched my chin about these as well as a replacement for my V2's (standard rotors).

Anybody used them?

Weight? Who cares - Shimano brakes perform excellently as 2 pots - so I'm expecting the new 4 pots to be even better!

my friend has just brought a set to replace his avid juicy 7's, no complaints as of yet. If they perform anything like the old xt four pots then they are going to be amazing. could always opt for the old saint 2 pots also if you didnt want four pots, you can still pick them up and naturally they've gone down in price also.

Avid Juicy's, Shimano XT, Formula. Easy.

Waste of time V2s IMO.

XTR stupidly overpriced.

Ive got Moto V2's on my IH and Marin, one with vented and the other without. I havent noticed too much of a difference but thats because I missed out on the Megavalanche this year and didnt make it to the alps.

Alpine decents the V2's with vented are worth it. Short DH blasts there is no point. The pro's dont use the vented rotors which gives you an idea.

People tend to forget the leavers and I have to say that the leavers are so so so good. Ajustable and great feel.

Moto V2's are overkill for some but if your riding in the alps then they are the way forward. You will regret the cheaper option when you finish a days riding and your bleading them again.
