I'm just new to the whole clipless pedals having had a road bike for a few months now with toe clips, just got a new bike and had to get myself some proper pedals, I got these http://www.bikebitsuk.com/look-easy-pedals-%C3%82%... which are faultless.
Hope you were talking about clipless pedals by the way

Meant to say, got these shoes at the same time http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/dhb_R1_Road_Shoe... also very good, and pretty cheap too.
The traditional problem with cycling shoes is thet the Italians dominated the market. The Italian foot is long and narrow, whilst the N European one is like a flipper.
A proper road bike demands proper road shoes. You don't get the best out of an MTB "boot" fitted with SPDs. IMHO, LOOK or TIME systems are superior.
As in all things, you get what you pay for. Road shoes with Carbon Fibre soles are very light and stiff, giving the best ride. But they are not good to walk around on.

EFA!I've had a road bike since June and splashed out on some Specialized carbon fibre shoes. The look cleat on the side I clip into/out of most has already worn down!
My old MTB shoes were great with a recessed cleat. These ones, I manage to waddle about a metre away from the bike before falling over. Damn things. They get a hell of a lot of power through the pedals though...

To describe them as lethal is over stating things. They are designed to put power into the pedals, not to walk around in. If you are falling over, take them off. You can get LOOK protectors for cleats.
A well known rider from the SE was involved in an accident and a coach ran over his foot. His foot was sideways on to the coach tyre, the carbon sole held up and he suffered no injury whatsoever.
