Wheel Hub combo

Current hub (Deore) has had its day...cost of attaching new hub to old wheel is only, I guess slightly less than new hub and new wheel...

What suggestions for around 120 notes or so. Riding is mainly XC, trails, nothing too 'radical'.

Had a look at Merlin and they can build a wheel with a standard Deore hub for 50 quid... or for a few dollars more (£130), a slight upgrade on the rim with a Hope Pro 11 135 disc...

Any others to look at?

For XC at that price you cant go far wrong with a Mavic 717 on a Hope Pro 2 IMO. Should come in around 110-120 quid depending on what spokes you go for.

Quite important if you are getting a wheel built from scratch is to get it done by someone who knows what they are doing! Ask around for a good wheel builder and not just the cheapest! Expect to pay about £50 for a good build with decent spokes.

you cant go wrong with what bob said im running that set up on the front of my bike. Finding a good wheel builder makes a huge difference

I have to say I've been very very impressed with my bottom of the range mavic factory built wheels - forget what they're called, but they're about £120 retail. They have been fit and forget and they don't get an easy ride as they're fitted to my winter bike which hardly gets cleaned, and I'm quite heavy. They really are brilliant value and light and strong also.

I've run a pair of Crossrides for a couple of years and rate them.

Had to replace the front after taco-ing it in a big off earlier in the year, so that's not the wheel's fault. Just had a rear spoke pull out of the hub though, which is a bit more of a pain as it's knackered the mounting hole on the hub effectively junking it.

Can't complain though - I'm 17st and don't ride especially "light". I think I paid about £110 for the set, so £55 a year on wheels is a bargain. A £500 wheelset would probably last me forever but I don't have that kind of spare change lying around and then I'd be forever worried about killing one in a crash (and I crash often!)
