Evening all,

I have recently moved to Guildford from Winchester. I was wondering if there was any good mountainbiking to be had in the area (Mostly XC/Freeride)?

I've found a really cool wooded area nr the centre which looks as if MTB'rs have been in the area (awesome singletrack downhill) here: (punch the co-ordinates into google maps) 51.225055,-0.558672

I've only recently got back into MTB'ing (used to race XC 10yrs ago) after getting fed up of falling off the BMX. I'm really enjoying it so far!

So, is there anything else to be had?

Do you know where Newlands Corner is? I think that could be quite good for some Mountain Biking smile

Thats 'Pewley downs' you can follow it east up 'St Marthas' to 'Newlands Corner' across 'Ranmore common' and end up at 'Box Hill' or as i like to call it the bh of a hill lol.
There are so many routes along those areas it can be months before you properly know where you are so plenty to keep you amused there.
From St marthas there is also the downs link which ends up down at the coast near Choreham, thats 40 odd miles but pretty flat as its a old railway line route.

Yeah, I was going to say it's all around that area.. It's massive really.

We used to do our "Sponsered Walk" around there.. Merrow>Newlands Corner>Chilworth & Back again.

Never stuck to the walk though, much more fun to run off into the woods hehe

Thank you very much!

Next time I head out to Pewley Downs I'll take a gentle ride over to Newlands Corner and see what's going on!

Also, if you're in the area and fancy a ride (bikes that is) followed by a beer, then let us know! I'm a tad friend-less in Guildford at the mo frown

Would be able to at some point but the weekends are pretty busy at the moment and night riding isnt great for showing someone around lol.
Theres also 'the lookout' over in bracknell which has proper routes and a special biking area but i havent been there yet.
Have a look in the Thames valley and surrey part of the forum as i have seen they have organised a few rides at the look out and would probably be interested in a guildford ride if you put up the idea.

From Guildford head east along the A25 towards Dorking, to the south is Pitch Hill, Holbury Hill and Leith Hill, to the north lie Ranmore Common and Box Hill. There are loads of trails to explore and there are plenty of public car parks around the area for you to start out from. Nirvana Cycles www.nirvanacycles.com in Westcott organise regular rides in the area every weekend, along with evening rides during the summer months.
Swinley forest in Bracknell is also excellent and has a dedicated mountain biking area with lots of singletrack and jumps.
There are a few clubs in the area and organised trail rides and races.

Clubs you may be interested in meeting up with include....

Velo Club Godalming Haslemere www.vcgodalming.co.uk
Berks on Bikes www.bobmbc.com
Redlands Trails www.redlandstrails.org

Local event/race organisers

Trail Break www.trailbreak.co.uk
Gorrick www.gorrick.com
Evans Cycles www.evanscycles.com/ride-it

Surry interactive map is also great for taking a look at what's in the area and for planning routes. http://surreymaps.surreycc.gov.uk/public/viewer.as...
