Hi

I am seriously thinking of buying a discounted 2008 stumpy. Trouble is I am not sure what size - M or L. I am 5'10" which puts me exactly at the cross over point between M & L. I rode a M and found it a little cramped, but wonder if this couldn't be sorted with a lay back seat post and a slightly longer stem.

Being a bit old school, by current bike is a 1999 stumpy hard tail, I would always have gone for as small a frame as possible.

Any suggestions, experience?

Cheers

Go for the medium, I'm 6'2" and the large is spot on for me.

Are you riding yours as standard or with different seat post/stem?

Thomson straight seat post and a 90mm Thomson stem but i think they come with 90mm standard don't they?

Maybe you have longer arms or legs.

I'm 5 10 and theres no way I'd go for the large Stumpy. Theres plenty of seatpost in there, and its an agile bike that will encourage you to move around a bit.

Interesting as the dealers and Specialized directly have suggested that I go for a large. This has nothing to do with stock levels as both are available.

I assume you Stumpy riders are happy with your bikes. Anybody riding a '08 model? I f so what model?

Suprised that at 5 10 you are looking at large Specialised frames.
I am just under 6 and found the decision a hard one to make. I ended up with an 07 model but was sized up on an 08 - both of which the 'L' felt better than the M.
I am not sure it is entirely a height thing. Think the total body frame shape n size is more complex than just height when it comes to frame decisions.

I am 5.9 and have a 2008 s works fsr medium
in line post , and I am having to swap to a 70mm stem from the std 90mm
I can't think that you need a large , as the wheelbase is quite long
just go for a medium , and swap to a lay back post.
it should be spot on.

Hi mate. Are you talking FSR stumpies here? If so I've got a Medium and I'm 5.10". Large felt really big when I was on it.

Spec recommended Large to me when I emailed them, but I think it would have been a mistake. They really need a size between M & L as its right on their frame boundary and is also the average height of a male.

p.s. just realised you are talking 08. Mines an 07, but I imagine frame sizes are consistent.

Go and sit on one in a shop. It is the only way you will kow for sure. Personaly I'd rather have a longer frame with a short stem, but I am a DH rider.

Well from all the answers I am still non-the-wiser, thanks anyway. I am hoping to get down to the dealers in the week or so and try them again for size.

yep.. only way is to try..

DONT get suckered into getting a too large frame by some roadie salesman. Remember stems can be changed easily to accomodate you

Now sorted!

Went for the Medium with lay-back Thomson seat post and slightly longer stem. Should be spot on.

Can't wait to collect next week. Any advice/precautions needed when first riding a brand new bike? Some people cover parts of the frame will protective tape or similar.
