So, having replaced the chain and rear cogs I decided that I didn't need to change the front as they weren't that worn.

They apparently are. I now have chronic chain suck on the middle ring.

Need a new one. Any suggestions for a decent four arm 32 tooth middle chainring (9 speed rear, so narrow chain). Or are they all much of a muchness?

Go to Chainreactioncycles.com and buy a chainset in the flood sale - you'll pay 15 quid for a chainring when you are likely to bag a bargain chainset for only 20 quid more.

Usually if one chainring has gone, the others are not far off.

True enough, but most of the good stuff is gone (I was in the shop and they looked for me). I'll look again.

Bottom and top cogs are fine, I commute on the beast so 90% of mile miles are on road in the middle ring...

They did have a Shimano SLX, but am sure they'll have some equivilent - maybe a nice Race Face or Truativ?

They had some MiddleBurn rings, but they're gone now...

I'm guessing it's a mtn bike and also a Shimano chainset as their alloy rings have poor durability.

In my experience the middle ring usually wears at least 3 times as quick as the other rings as it gets used most of the time, so you should be fine just replacing that. Middleburn rings are supposed to be really durable, but I have not tried them.

It's a shimano chainset, yes, and I thought the small and large rings were alloy, but the middle was harder because you use it all the time.

I'm going to buy a middleburn and see how it goes. smile

The middle ring can be either alloy, steel or a fancy combination of materials depending on what chainset you have. Middleburn make good replacement chainrings and so do TA. I'll probably get TA rings to replace my XT ones when it is time.

Well, ChainReactions delivered the replacement in under 24 hours, so I'm impressed.

The sun is out, so I'm about to go and replace the ring. I am a hamfisted monkey, so wish me luck...

Grrr. It's now raining and I appear not to have a crank extractor.

Important note 1 - ensure you have all the tools before commencing...
