Just been out for an early ride.
On a wide part of the trail, I came across a large group of runners, they were scattered into groups of 3-4 and I slowed down so I could pass them, all was going well, as I passed a group, they would call ahead "bike" and the next group would move aside I would politely say "thank you" and pass. The front group of 4 were all side by side and 3 of the 4 moved to the side. This wasnt a problem as there was plenty of room to pass.
As I went by the small bloke who wouldnt move shouted at me "come near me with that thing and I will put you over the f
king handle bars!"
What??
I had passed with 3-4 ft spare, no malicious intent, going slowly to prevent accidents and with the right that the path is as much mine as thiers.
I stopped, putting the bike in his path so he couldnt pass. At that point my 3 dogs caught up with me (rotty crosses). I stopped him and asked him if he had just threatened me?
I had taken the wind out of his verbal assult. He stammered and spat out "yes"!
Fine.
My turn.
"You foul mouthed little snot, I am to put into practice my 8 years martial arts training and remove your jaw, I will then stick it up your arse where it actually belongs. Because I believe in keeping the s
t of the paths I will then let my dogs eat your corpse... Any more threats? or would you like me to continue with my ride?"
I continued my ride.....

I was fully on your side until your reply to him. It just made you sound like a knob.

We hve the same problem here in Denmark with all forest users having to share. Eventhough we have dedicated MTB trails, people still find the need to destroy trails, hammer nails into roots causing punctures and laying tree trunks and branches across our way.. go figure.
We tackle this, not with random threats of abuse/violence, but by EDUCATION, stopping and talking like normal people and handing out flyers stating the rules of the forest etc..
I think you did nothing to further our cause, but only make the division larger.
Well done.. you should be proud.

Why bother even giving him the satisfaction of replying - and using your dogs for backup....I bet he was scared

I dont really care if I sound like a knob but this arse and bully required a responce. A non-confrontational responce was not going to work. As far as I am concerned he got what he deserved.
I was not looking for a fight and to be honest, if it had turned physical, I would have been the first one to leave.
That kind of rudeness and he was blatantly looking for a confrontation. The fact that someone had the beans to stop and challenge caused him to shut up. There was no call for it and my responce was fueled in a large way by the adrenalin of a good ride. There was no need for that bull from him and I had no reason to take it. Why should I? His expectation was that he could abuse people and get away with it.

Good on you,
I know its not the correct response to some but imo you treat people how you want to be treated and if someone has that kind of attitude they deserve to be brought down a peg or two.
Ofcourse there is always the easy option, the correct option and that would have been to run the f
ker over
