Boring subject I know, but now the nights have drawn in I need a rear light when I'm cycling the country lanes near where I live.

I have a nice headlight set up I use for offroad nightriding ( hope 4 LED) , but I've never bothered with a rear light before as I've never really ventured onto tarmac at night.

So, anyone have any recommendations for a very bright, waterproof rear led light ?

Smart Superflash - £11.

Got 2 bright LEDs and 1 really bright 0.5 watt. Horrible to ride behind. If you get hit, the driver was blind or the did it deliberately to get rid of the horrible red strobe.

Some people have had water problems, but mine has a decent seal (got it from CRC a month ago). Someone on YACF put there's in a bucket for 5 mins with no problem. Maybe there was a dodgy early batch.

The Blackburn Mars-4 is eye-wateringly bright. I bought one to replace the last light that fell off a while back and it's coped admirably with the deluges of recent weeks.

It's a design classic:

but works great and is totally water/mud proof. Never let me down despite two years of abuse riding 3-4 times a week on/off road smile

Another vote for the Smart 1/2 Watt LED. It is ridiculously bright, and only a tenner here:

I use a Smart 1/2 Watt and a Blackburn Mars 3.0. (also cheap on Tredz) Anyone following me must really hate me, but they won't fail to see me! And if one fails, you have a backup.

I might partake of one of these designs, my rear light is ok but could be better.

I asked Hope if they were going to make a rear light, their answer was "thinking about it but no plans yet". I hope they do, I'll have one.

Billed as the brightest rear light available last year when I bought mine, now it simply says 'probably' the brightest. Nonetheless it's a shed load brighter than the Smart at £11 (becuase I have one of those aswell) although as Mekon says, the Smart would certainly be ample, infact save your cash, buy one of those.

Actually, I think you'll find the DiNotte 140L is the daddy.

That DiNotte looks awesome, but I think you'd get an ASBO for using in on the road! Plus, at £99, I reckon 10 Smarts would give it a run for it's money!

I have one too.

They are brilliant, you can have 2 settings running at the same time making one far more visible. LEDs are bright enough to be seen during the day too. Bit pricey but does the job and battery life is great.
