Son's bought himself a bike to ride to and from work - Clapham to Farrigdon. It's a Charge "Plug", single-speed sort of courier/track bike type thing. Not like anything I've seen before but he reckons it's great for getting around London because it's flat. Anyway I'm going to get him a water proof top so is there a fashionable or better quality brand that's currently favoured by cycling types? scratchchin

Good luck, and insists he wears a helmet. I once came off on ice, fell straight over sideways (making a slow right turn at the time, didn't have time to unclip shoes), cracked my helmet in about 6 pieces, not even a bruise to my head though.

Well worth it.

Riding a bike like a Charge Plug means your son is obviously a bit "trendy" (great bike by the way, I'd love one) so I would probably have a word with him and see what he wants to avoid dissapointing him. Cycling gear is incredibly personal and I'd always prefer to choose and chip in the extra for something I'll really love and use rather than something that was "almost" right.

Sensible option for a London commuter would be something in hi-viz yellow so he stands out in traffic but he may hate it and want something a bit less in your face. If he's commuting probably worth getting something that packs down REALLY small so he can always take it come rain or shine so as not to arrive at work like a drowned rat if he gets caught out. And I'd also say go for something with serious breathability, perhaps look for that over lots of pockets and ultimate waterproofing, so he can arrive at work wet on the outside and dry on the inside. Requirements for a blast through town in a shower are a bit different to something to live in on an extended ride over the Pennines for a couple of days!

MBUK did a test recently, might be worth a look at that...

Hmm, i'm a big fan of the Endure eVent Venturi, but realise it's probably not the coolest looking jacket around. With this in mind, have a butchers at the Gore Cosmo Plus. Pricey, but as cool as a cucumber IMO.

Indeed it does have a certain sort of look to it doesn't it! I grew up on 10 speed racers so I still think you need gears around London wink

Thanks for all the advices chaps...

Cool + safe rarely appear in the same sentence though, and i'm sure Gore have engineered some reflective tabs on the jacket in appropriate positions.

That is a soft shell, not a waterproof. Windproof, water resistant & insulated.

I've got one of these in yellow. Paclite shell doesn't take up much space. Only draw back is that it only has one breast pocket.

I've got a Rab Turok E-Vent jacket, very light and an excellent jacket.
